GameTrailers Officially Closing Down

zulux21:

Mosfet:
Well god damnit.
I don't understand why it went to shit.
Gt has the best reviews and content hands down.
God fucking damnit.I love you gt.

the forums were constantly erroring out for a while, and ultimately when they moved to the first new forums without factions they broke the site to the point where it was taking 10-15 seconds to load or post anything driving people to find properly functioning sites.

beyond that, the GT video player hasn't been good for years, meanwhile between the start of this site and now sites like twitch, and youtube grew and grew leaving this site to pretty much only live on its original content, which while good never managed to find mainstream success.

ultimately I can't blame Defy Media for viewing this site as a dying site, it has been for a while. I do blame them for this poor send off though. It should be a wind down, not a goodbye. Ideally the site would have been allowed to work through e3 this year to give it one last go before everything was done, but I can understand not wanting to back a sinking ship for 4 more months, but they should have at least had through the end of this month to celebrate GT's history instead of just a "we are closing today"

but alas, nothing can be done. Super sites like youtube and reddit will likely continue to grow, and focused sites will likely dwindle down. It wouldn't be surprising if in 5-10 years IGN was gone as well due to users continuing to move to super sites.

It's incredibly sad, I love the GT staff and so many of the users too. Great people, great personalities but all built on a crumbling architecture.
I actually finally thought tings could be turning around when they said there'd be a new site, new forums, I was hoping at some point we could get things back to the way they were with a thriving community creating videos and blogs and sub-communities like factions.
Quite a shock to go from rising hope to absolutely none, instant death without warning.

I can only hope most of the staff will stick together and create something new

I find it sad and a bit creepy that he is still stalking me.
I'll miss him :(

I'm glad the site is still up to be able to read some of the forum post before whenever the shutoff happens.

Honestly, this is the first time I've been on the site in years, and though I believe I did stop frequenting this place shortly after the first forum migration, it wasn't due to the loss of some key features or any change in the site for that matter. I had just slowly begun to phase away from gaming news/journalism/reviews/discussion on every site due to just slowly feeling as if I could generate more thoughts and opinions on what games to play on my own while trying to move on with my life, and would mainly just watch big game announcement events like E3 or occasionally look at some news articles that would be related to something I was looking forward too.

I always did believe GT video reviews were, most often, more than fair, and felt like I got a good consensus of the game every time I watched a review. Which is more than what could be said of how I thought of other site's reviews at the time.
I also very much enjoyed the forum side of the site, with it's sleek layout, fun "Link to the Past" level up system, I joined in a lot of fun discussions and made some cool friends during the time I posted here that I believe I still may have added on XBL/PSN/Steam.

And while I was sad to hear of the shutdown, I'm actually quite more depressed as to what this place has become.

Shoryuk3n:
Honestly, if GT's forum would change back to the way it was in 2008, with the user movies, blogs, factions, GTP etc., I would bet it would do good again. For me personally I quit posting because the 'new forums' introduced to many issues and because of the fact that regulars quit posting. GT had everything needed to succeed today:
- Creators can upload their content in the form of a user movie. Content creators could ingage directly with their viewers that way.
- Faction can create sub-communities and had their own forums.
- GTP could have been used as a monitization system for the user movies section, or even actual money.

Old GT had a fluid system of keeping you engaged.

I remember all of this, and while I have no idea of the potential roller coaster of issues the site went through despite not even frequenting this site anymore, I still had hope that things were going well.
But alas, like others have said, Nothing last forever.

Also

Shoryuk3n:
Monty Oum's Haloid was a huge hit as a user movie, and there were many more.

Rest his soul.
I now recall that this was the first place I had seen Haloid which led me to discover Monty Oum's other shorts like Dead Fantasy.
I remember him eventually joining Roosterteeth, which I slowly phased away from as well probably around the time after Halo Reach came out. I never did get a chance to watch his original series "RWBY" that he worked on with them, and was pretty baffled when I learned about a year ago that he had passed away.

But then again I remember that Monty wasn't the only thing I was exposed too on GT as well.
I remember watching James Rolfe's Ghostbuster review as the Angry Video Game Nerd for the first time here, and even all of Handsome Tom and Stuttering Craig's Screwattack Countdown. To which led to all of Screwattack's other content.

But the original content was where the site's heart was.
I'll always remember listening to Brandon Jones' voice on the game reviews, Retrospective, and Pop Culture videos, and Rich Brown's voice on the GT countdowns.
I'll remember watching GTTV with guys like Geoff Keighley and Daniel Kayser.
I'll always remember listening to Invisible Walls and how Marcus would always piss off everyone in the comments.
I'll always remember this place.

It was all during a very influential part of my life, and I'm glad I spent some of that time here.
Thanks for everything GT

You know, I've realised GT's videoplayer is not that bad after all :(

It just needed a little love ;_;

So basically the site wasn't managed/funded well enough? A shame. It has been an entertaining time the last few years, and I hope to see (mostly) everyone at the next big hangout.

I only have an IGN account I haven't posted on in a while
- jbRAMburger

And Steam
- sutureself

PS forums but never really post there
- c3RAMburger

Suppose it's time to check out what's going on around there lately.

Take care, everyone

Well, this is it for me then.
I will not migrate to another forum.
Honestly, i have come here less and less since the last redesign, but it's always sad to see our "home" crash and burn.

Oh well......goodbye everyone, be cool, be happy :)

Will the youtube channel continue, or will also go kaput?

Found my old sig stored on one of my old drives!I'll rock it

The youtube channel won't continue but I doubt they to take it down.

It was a pleasure to meet you, I always saw you as someone concern with the tendencies of the industry and wanting the best for the gaming community, and thank you for that care. I just disagree with your point of view. :)

No more Final Bosman for the next while is disappointing I must say. Maybe they'll go the Patreon route.

Well this sucks.

I suppose you guys can find me over at IGN as my primary gaming site. Gamespot is my secondary. Same user name as on here. My PSN ID is also the same if you want to game it up sometime.

It's been fun guys.

Damn, I have been visiting GT since 2002, back when it was just a landing page with loads of small individual links to game videos. I was there for the first Invisible Walls, when Dead Fantasy 1 premiered and when Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter inexplicably got a 9.8 (something I remember Shane felt that he had to explain on IW).

Farewell GT, you will be missed.

P.S. It's a real shame that Defy screwed up your archival system, was tempted to go back through the game reviews...

WoW thats sad.

GT was and is as of now a great place for beloved gaming content, from Originals to Previews and more. I wish this sad news wouldn't happen. =(

If there a way to archive all the great content from GT?

You too man :)

Now, for my last trick, i'll reveal my true age that i never did and always joked about it...i'm 40.

Bye everyone, see you on the other side ;)

It's the end of the world as we know it
It's the end of the world as we know it
It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine

Well that is horrible news!! Always loved this site from 07. Will always remember Santiagoflores and the whole kill zone 2 reveal, good times! Also the very first dos and don't from Bossman and Huber calling out my comment about Mafia 2! And I will miss the first fifteen, that was a good show too :(

Jeez, feels like losing a friend. Hope they all get somewhere new to go and start up again. Sad day :(

Is there even a timeline for when they'll pull the plug?

I guess the lack of info into the why/when/etc. is an extension of the site's problems that led to its gradual, but now sudden demise. What's ironic is they just put all this work into revamping the site. Maybe it was one last effort to right the course of this clipper - no pun...well, actually yeah what the hell, pun intended.

The reason why GT community is different than other is simply beacuse it is attractive. even its in dying days barely anyone post. still attract more than super active sites like IGN and Gamespot.

I wish you all best of luck in future.

Well damn, since it's last day, might as well try find the first ava and sig I had.

See you around, somewhere folks. ^3^

I was never really anything here and didn't register account.
However this is not good...

here's something we can listen to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRzBVv2CSE0 it's as nostalgic as fuck too...
Defy Media can throw themselves under a bus or something, they are done for if they're killing GT.

You too Black Cell. Join the steam group and stay in touch. Every group needs a bad guy hahahaha. I'll make you love GTA one of these days lol(hint, play the whole of GTA V in first person and watch your mind get blown)

Really?! Unbelievable. :'(

*Sigh* I'm gonna miss you all... Well, most of you anyway.

Goodbye!

Welp, goodbye to old GT. Sure had some good times on here. The factions on here were filled with some of the very best people. The internet won't be the same without this place.

i kinda sensed this was going to happen by the lack of content being put on site in the last couple of months

it's sad, this was my first and favorite site for games for a long time, even before i joined

good luck to all the team that worked here and made this site for what it was, and hope to see you all somewhere, eventually

Unichrone on Xbox Live/PSN. Steam is WhiteMousse. I don't know my Wii friend code, who the hell ever does? I'll edit my post tonight when I get home. I've been here since 2006 and I don't want this place to go away. I have so many good memories here and I want more!

Hell look me up on Facebook! jay.skinner.73@facebook.com

Phew...damn man...just wow. I genuinely was not expecting to read this.

...I'm at loss for words personally and for some of you that have been with the site all this time, comes as a total shock. As of now, I don't know what's going to happen to the forums yet but, I will let you guys know when I get an answer for you...

I'm really speechless right now and uh...yeah...shame...

Dude, please PLEASE get ahold of AC. Please tell him to give us his tags for PSN/XBL/Nintendo
