Financial Transfer Scams
Posted: 12/19/2006
Financial Transfer Scams are SPAM requests that attempt to convince individuals to move funds via wire and/or ACH from banks and Brokerage firms.
In several instances, the subjects, usually foreign, post online offers on popular Internet sites or by email soliciting assistance from United States citizens. The subjects are allegedly posting ways to make money by facilitating financial transactions with the assistance of a third-party. The foreign subjects state they cannot receive funds from their customers directly because of their location outside of the United States. The foreign subject asks United States citizens to act as a third party to receive funds from victims who have purchased products from the foreign subject. The United States citizen, receiving the funds from the victims, collects a commission or fee, and then wires the proceeds to the foreign subject.
The victim of this SPAM could be with the person whose money you are receiving or yourself with the release of your personal information which leads to Identity Theft.
These solicitations may include but not limited to the following personal information:
- Full Name
- Bank/Brokerage Account Information
- Telephone/Fax number
- Contact Address
- Occupation and Title
- Age
- Education
Scam Alert! - Beware of Fake Scottrade Checks
Posted: 7/27/2006
Scottrade has become aware of a scam using counterfeit Scottrade checks. Anyone (not just Scottrade customers) should be suspicious if they receive a letter in the mail stating that they have won a lottery. In this scam, accompanying the letter is a counterfeit check that appears to be from Scottrade for the consumer to cash. The check is counterfeit! If you are asked to wire money back to anyone after receiving a check that appears to be from Scottrade....Beware! It is a SCAM!
The check supposedly represents an advance of the lottery winnings to pay fees. In order to receive the full amount of the winnings, the individual is supposed to cash the check and then wire a portion of the money back to the company. However, that company never intends to send winnings back, and instead steals the individual's money.
If you receive any mail of this type, DO NOT cash the check. Instead, contact the authorities. Click on "Reporting & Resolving Fraud" at the top of the page to learn what steps you should take and whom you should notify.
Please be cautious when providing others with your personal information. Scottrade will never ask you to disclose personal information (including your Scottrade Account Number or Password), in an unsolicited email, letter or phone call.
