The US government has granted the first permit for deepwater oil drilling since last year's disastrous spill at a BP-owned oil well in the Gulf of Mexico.
It smells like oil. Swaths of marsh grass in Bay Jimmy are flattened, glued together with a brown sludge. Step into mud, and the hole fills up with a dark, oily substance.
The Gulf Coast Oil Rig that exploded in the Gulf is located 80 miles south of Abbeville, Louisiana. It is located in Block 371 and is known as Rig 380. All thirteen crew members aboard the rig have been safely rescued with one crew member having minor injuries.

GRAND ISLE — Officially, the beach at Grand Isle was closed Saturday as cleanup crews mopped up oil that came ashore the last several days.

Feb 26, 2009, Santa Rosa, Ecuador — A rupture in Ecuador's second-largest oil pipeline polluted the Santa Rosa river in the Amazon jungle, pouring 14,000 barrels of crude oil into the river.
