GameStop: We'll Only See One New Console in 2013

Sony and Microsoft are currently both attempting to avoid discussing their new consoles as much as possible. But that doesn't stop others from discussing them, and GameStop executives seem to believe that we'll only being seeing one new console next year.

As we already know, the Wii U will likely be launching before Christmas. But GameStop CEO Paul Raines thinks that we'll only see one new console next year:

"We have not been expecting two more consoles in 2013. We're expecting Wii U this holiday, another one next year, and another one in '14. These rumours change every week, but we're hearing more about next year."

GameStop obviously doesn't have the final word in console releases… but they are a major retailer, and if anybody has the inside line, it's them. One thing Raines didn't share, however, is which console we might see first.

Our Take: This isn't really that surprising. These systems have been in development for a number of years, and neither Sony nor Microsoft want to repeat the problems both the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 faced at launch with pricing and quality control, respectively.

Plans can change, of course, but if they want to take the time to get it right, we can't fault Microsoft or Sony for that.

As for who might come first, considering that development kits have already been distributed, we're betting that the next Xbox will appear next year.
