Does Digital Britain go far enough?
December 3rd, 2009Some web hosting users will be excited by some of the ideas and proposals put forward by the Digital Britain report, but others are not so impressed.
Indeed, Dame Wendy Hall recently voiced her concerns at the Digital Media – Addressing the Innovations and Challenges for Digital Britain conference in London, suggesting that Digital Britain lacked "vision".
"We’re going to have two megabits [per second] everywhere, but we can’t get HDTV [High-Definition Television] on that. As a nation we need to have a much higher vision," she asserted.
Ms Hall stressed that just because the UK is bankrupt does not mean that optical fibre should not be going up.
If the progression of Britain’s digital future is mishandled, then the UK society will be a "backward one", she added.
Currently, £1 in every £10 spent is generated by parts of the economy that are accounted for under the Digital Britain report. So it seems web hosting users involved in retail or other paid-for services will be impacted by government decisions on the report.
But will web hosting users benefit from the government plans or does more need to be done to really benefit them as Ms Hall suggests? The government may end up making alterations, but only time will tell whether measures will go far enough.
