Word Choice Matters

See Song Lyrics
When writing "All I Ask" with Adele, Bruno Mars challenged the songstress over the line Take me by the hand while we do what lovers do. He thought another word should be used instead of "lovers," as it's a bit of an antiquated phrase (in our current era of baes and fams, of course). But Adele was firm on her choice, and after Mars heard the record, he realized she was right all along. "It's this grand word that makes the song bigger because no one says it," Mars confirmed.

Harry Styles has a piece of advice that fits neatly under this category. "Don't over-edit or strip down your lyrics too much," he offered on USA Today. Usually, the first draft you jot down ends up being the final product.
