A Virginia mother says she will appeal the conviction of her autistic son, who was charged with beating a police officer after he approached the teen last spring in search of a suspicious person in the area who may have had a gun.

The jury in a Stafford County, Virginia courtroom on Friday recommended a 10 and a half year sentence for Reginald Cornelius Latson. A judge will officially sentence him on May 19. He was charged on two felony counts - assault on a law enforcement officer and wounding in the commission of a felony.

"This is not over," Lisa Alexander, Latson's mother, told BlackAmericaWeb.com. "I will not allow them to do to my son what they have done to so many other black men in Virginia."

What is really scary is the utterings of the bloggers at black america web. Nobody trusts the police, everybody twists the facts and constructs excuses for this guy. I'm sorry, he was convicted.

Aspergers Syndrome (a form of Autism) is not by itself disabling. Developmental disabilities such as Autism range from A to Z, seriously disabling to not much at all. We don't know how disabled he is. By the way, I'm watching American Idol as I type this and just listened to James Durbin who has Aspergers.

“They intimidate you with a bunch of charges, and then they get you to plea bargain. It’s a corrupt system,” she said.

That happens all too often if you can't afford a good attorney. Our justice system has two tiers, one for those who can afford a good lawyer and another for those who can't. Those who can't just get pushed through the justice system, like this man, and don't get real justice.

I live in Virginia. Her son has a snowballs chance in hell to get justice.
