Genetics, high calorie diet, poverty, some self inflicted some due to discrimination. Complicated issues cookin mama. My half brothers & half sister are iriqouis-american and I have lived on a reservation & seen the discrimination first hand. I have also seen the self destructive behavior. there is no easy answer to a complex issue. there IS a simple answer to legitimate property claims, own up to them.

I think its sad the way they were treated back in those days. The horses got better treatment. i was watching a episode of Jillian show and she was on a reservation in AZ and what was sad is that the food they were eating and calling tradition was amercian crap not real native food of their ancestors and it made me sad. I know its sad that they still get discriminated against to do this day.

I am happy that they won.

Look up the Three Sisters of Native American Agriculture, Maize, Beans and Squash. Those, along with with Game, Shellfish and Fish were the basis of Native American cuisine. One of my favorite dishes from childhood was a White Hominy Grits and Kidney Bean boiled bread that is still a staple of meals among the Six Nations. This was part of a low fat, lean, plenty of good carbs and vegetables diet that we would be well served eating ourselves.

It saddens me to see what the First Nations people have in many cases been reduced to, and in my case has a familial component as well. (My Step Father was a Mohawk from Kananwake outside Montreal, PQ, Canada) I went to first grade at the Catholic Mission School on the Reservation, the only non native kid there, it also gives me a peculiar perspective on discrimination having been the recipient of it. This plus growing up in the Detroit area as well, informed my attitudes towards minorities and discrimination as I grew up. I lived through the riotsof '67, and saw line after line of federal troops headed down town, and it made me wonder why? Ah well I am wandering off from the subject of my own seed..I tend to get distracted that way some times!

cynic l here in utah they tend to eat alot of fry bread made with bleached enriched white flour and cooked in lard. I to remember the riots we had them in my hometown of Portland Or. Scary for a 11 year old.

never had fry bread but have wanted to, made with hard wheat flour or massa flour I bet it would be pretty good. And Lard gets a bad rap, all fats and oils have pluses and minuses.
