Israel has stepped up its attempts to stop an aid ship breaking its blockade of Gaza, sending a letter to the UN and engaging Greece and Moldova in talks.

The Moldovan-flagged ship, Amalthea, chartered by a charity run by the son of Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi, was due to leave the Greek port of Lavrio on Saturday.

Israel said it now believed the ship would not reach Gaza.

The Amalthea is being loaded with about 2,000 tonnes of food, cooking oil, medicines and pre-fabricated houses.

It has been chartered by the Gaddafi International Charity and Development Foundation. Its chairman is Saif al-Islam Gaddafi.

Charity director Yousef Sawani said: "We are doing what we can, this is our responsibility. If everyone says 'we will not allow this', nothing will happen and the people of Gaza will continue under starvation."

Which parallel universe is this guy living in? As numerous articles and videos have shown, there is no problem with starvation in Gaza other than what Hamas is causing.

If you've got nothing to hide, what are you hiding by taking this stance?

Don't know how many times you people have to be shown pictorial and videographic proof of the abundance in the markets of Gaza. Israel is simply playing the games of these "humanitarians". The proof will be in the type and abundance of cries for Israel's demise should this ship go ahead and try to run the blockade. Israel is doing everything possible to prevent another incident. Some day her detractors will have to acknowledge that they will lose the propaganda war. There are only so many stupid and bigoted people in the world.

League. The blockade hasn't caused the gazans harm. It is Hamas that has done that all by themselves with their incessant rocket attacks, smuggling, politial murders and general savagery. How is the WB faring by the way? I hear pretty good but then again they haven't attacked Israel lately. Just the usual trash talking. Where is the WB blockade?

they dropped suicide attacks because of that nasty "apartheid" wall and you know it. Food is in fact getting into Gaza and you know that too. It is items that can be used to make more weapons, smuggling tunnels, and sites for rocket launchers that are being stopped. Rocket attacks have not "stopped". They have slowed down considerably because they can't get the materials they need through.

Through tunnels so there is no problem then? Hamas arrests those who fire rockets.

When you talk about Hamas attacking Israel, you also have to remember all the times that Israel has attacked the Gaza strip. Blame not only goes to Hamas, but Israel too.

Suspiciously

This is the same son that Obama contributed $40 Million of our tax money to his charity, shortly after Obama took office.....OOOphs! Sorry. Some of that money went to Gadaffi's daughter's charity! So now we can watch to see what happens to our money. Maybe it will all wind up at the bottom of the sea! Oh but wait! I just remembered...Obama recently sent $400 Million of our tax dollars to Gaza! Or is Hamas holding it for safe keeping?

When are we going to get smart and do something about all this bull sh_t?

McSpocky:

Israel can be blamed for many things, but why for trying to protect their borders and their citizens? There are not many rockets being launched from Gaza now, are there?

If Isreal stops the ship and there is only food on it and some one else gets killed by them... Then the Government of Isreal is going to have to change there attitude or face the fact that most of the world is against them. Not that they don't know that now but it may force them to start the Peace Process for real and not keep putting up road blocks. That is not doing them any good. They have already found out even countries like the Turks are mad at them.

There only friend left may be the USA and President Obama is putting pressure on them. It is in our interest as well as there's and the Palestinians to come to the table and talk real peace and not the sham that has taken place for years.

Israel has given fair warning to not attempt to run the blockade. This is not about goods. It is about breaking Israel. The entire situation would not exist if the gazans had not "elected" terrorists as their government and now they are paying the price, not by Israel, but by the behavior of their "representative" government, both to Israel and to them.

ralphie,

I don't think there's a gazan who is capable of understanding the concept of taking responsibility.

Here comes the bull@!$%# again. The ships sponsors have no issue with the humanitarian items being delivered via the proper channels. Trying to break through the blockade with no place to port in Gaza is just a diversion. If you cared at all about the people in Gaza and wanted them to have a better life, youwould get rid of Hamas.

One way or another, that ship will not break the blockade and anchor off Gaza. Why can't they just do the humanitarian thing the right way? They CAUSE the confrontation.
