At the top of any Newsvine page is a menu bar, and one of the selections is "Customize Column". Click that.

Scroll down until you see "About [your username]". Click "edit".

Click "upload" or "change/remove" (whichever of the two buttons is showing).

Click the "browse" button, then choose the graphic you want to upload. After you click the graphic you want, click "Send File".

Close the little window, click "Save your profile", and you're done!

Changing your avatar really isn't that hard. One thing you must do first, however, is have the picture you want to use already located on your computer. It should be a picture that you own, or have found on the net with a copyright of "Creative commons". It has to be already on your computer for the next step, so if you go find one on the net, be sure to copy it to a folder you can easily browse to, such as your "My Pictures" directory or desktop.

Once you have done that, follow these steps:

At the top of any Newsvine page is a menu bar, and one of the selections is "Customize Column".

Click that, scroll down until you see "About [your username]". Click "edit".

You will now see your old avatar (picture). Make sure the popup blocker in your browser is off. Click "upload" or "change/remove" (whichever of the two buttons is showing), and a small pop-up window will be displayed.

Click the "browse" button, then choose the graphic you want to upload. After you click the graphic you want, click "Send File".

On the next screen, there is a slider you can use to resize the image (if needed). Then click "Save". Close the little window, click "Save your profile", and you're done!

Excellent job!

Very interesting and useful article McSpocky! Maybe while you were capturing and cropping and cutting and pasting your instructional images last night I was working on new Avatars, for my column and my group. Have a look if you wish and please let me know what you think?

Your avatar looks cool. That tree and background look similar to where I live. lol

The group avatar I really like. The combination of the hand with the olive branch, and the colors send a powerful message. I also like the way it isn't just a hand holding a branch, but you did the branch on top of a semi-transparent overlay. Nice effect.

Your previous article on “Free Newsvine Avatars” has reminded me of doing some long overdue house keeping. Thanks and well done!

I have seen this question on two different articles in the last few days. Great work! (Wouldn't it be great to have a help index on NV?) Or there is and I need help finding it. LOL!

Consider It

Well done. That green head is a little pet peeve of mine. ;-)

Division by Zero

Generally three things come into play when I consider someone for membership in one of my groups, whether they have a green head avatar (strike one), whether they lack a bio (strike two), and whether they just joined Newsvine this month (strike three). The green head avatar is generally indicative of someone who is either very new or is unmotivated to join the community aspect of Newsvine.

Oh how I dislike that 'little green head' too. It worked for me for a couple of days when I first joined until I settled on a photograph I wanted to replace it.

The balloon I use I'd taken at the Balloon Fest held in London at Harris Park every August. It was a perfect shot as the balloon was lifting from the ground and traveled right over us. I've been considering updating to something else but haven't settled on what just yet. So many stunning scenes and only one avatar.....

I'm a firm believer in only ever posting/using photos I personally took with my own camera. This way I'll never have to deal with someone coming back at me with squealing about misuse or theft.
