What are TLDs and new TLDs?

TLD stands for top-level domain. A domain is what you type into the address bar of your Web browser to get to a website, like www.GoDaddy.com. New TLDs refer to new domain extensions that are about to become available.

Why are there new TLDs?

New domain extensions have been created because finding a relevant, available domain name can be difficult. ICANN is releasing hundreds of new domain extensions to increase availability and change how people find information online.

Why do new TLDs matter to me?

New domain extensions let you create a relevant name that defines your website, brand, business, group or organization. Registering a new TLD that represents your market can increase customer trust and set you apart from competitors.

When will new TLDs be available?

We expect the first groups of new TLDs to launch in fall 2013. Check back for more information on release dates, registration requirements, pre-registration and other important details.

How is ICANN involved?

ICANN is the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, a non-profit group responsible for the coordination and oversight of the global Internet system. You can find out more about them at www.icann.org.

What are the new TLD registration phases: Pre-registration, Sunrise, Landrush and General Availability?

Each registration phase has a defined date for acceptance and processing. Pre-registration lets you submit a registration request ahead of its date. GoDaddy collect pre-registration requests and holds them in a queue until it's time to submit (at the opening of Sunrise, for example). Sunrise is a registration period specifically for trademark holders. Landrush occurs after sunrise. It's a premium registration opportunity for those wanting an early, non-trademark registration. General Availability is first come, first served registration. It's open to the public but subject to registration requirements (like membership to an organization, for example).
