Former Arizona Rep. Gabby Giffords, who was shot at a town hall in 2011, said she was "heartbroken" that House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) was critically injured in Alexandria, Va. on Tuesday.

A gunman sprayed dozens of bullets at Republican congressmen playing baseball at an Alexandria, Virginia park Wednesday morning.

The majority whip was wounded along with four others.

Only the suspect was killed when he was gunned down by police.

"It doesn't matter if you're a Democrat or a Republican ... you're connected to your colleagues, current and former, by a shared sense of service to ideals far greater than yourself," Giffords said in a statement.

She said she knows the courage it takes to recover from such a shooting, and added, "I know Steve and everyone there this morning have such courage in great supply."

Giffords was shot in the head in 2011 during a shooting that killed 6 and wounded 18 at a meeting with her constituents.
