A former adviser to Hillary Clinton called for the Mueller investigation to end Monday on "The Story with Martha MacCallum."

Mark Penn said that he doesn't believe there is a "concrete intelligence origin" for the probe. Penn worked with former President Bill Clinton during independent counsel Kenneth Starr’s investigation in 1998.

He said that through the Mueller investigation, people's lives have been "disrupted and ruined" all in an effort to "get the president."

"We get the president through elections, and if we don't get back to winning our battles on issues and elections whether you're Democrat or Republican, it's 1998 all over again," he said.

Penn wrote in an op-ed for The Hill that the Mueller probe has become "a threat to all those who ever want to participate in a national campaign or an administration again."

He added that "the deep state is in a deep state of desperation."

Penn's piece came after President Trump demanded the Department of Justice look into whether it "infiltrated" his 2016 campaign for "political purposes."

He added that Mueller cannot be fired, but that he needs to be "defeated" like Starr.

"Stopping Mueller isn’t about one president or one party. It’s about all presidents and all parties," Penn wrote.
