Gwen stands up to bullies, but story raises questions

One of American Girl's newer dolls is stirring up controversy because she is "homeless."

American Girl introduced Gwen as a character in a harrowing story of how girls can both bully others and stand up to bullies. But a New York columnist's criticism of the homeless doll as "political indoctrination" is raising questions about its appropriateness.

The criticism this doll is somehow "political indoctrination" floors me. How the hell would anything that teaches children that there are people in the world with better and worse circumstances than they have be "political indoctrination?"

Because acknowledging homeless children is anti-republican.

My issue is that the doll looks more bohemian chic than homeless.

You have to drop it in the mud yourself. It says so on the package.

It's ridiculous how much those things cost, and the clothes are ridiculous too. I don't think a homeless girl could afford one, and the idea that your American girl doll needs an American Girl Doll friend, isn't the lesson I want my daughter learning.
