"A vote last week by the United Nations General Assembly Human Rights Committee has LGBT and human rights activists outraged over the decision to remove "sexual orientation" from a resolution that protects people from arbitrary executions.

"Veteran UK LGBT activist Peter Tatchell in an interview with Britain's pinknews.uk, Jessica Geen, said, "The move was a "shameful day in United Nations history" and would give a "de facto green light to the on-going murder of LGBT people by homophobic regimes, death squads and vigilantes."

He also criticized the nations of South Africa and Cuba, who voted in favor of the amendment.

“Presidents Raul Castro and Jacob Zuma should hang their heads in shame. They’ve betrayed the liberation ideals that they profess to uphold,” Tatchell said.

We were just in South Africa this past New Years. Jacob Zuma is a selfish man. He is 65 or older and a polygamist. He has 5 or 6 wives (one committed suicide). He doesn't care about LGBT issues or aids for that matter.

His country has serious social problems while his efforts are only dedicated to self interest. His absence of actions and concerns for humanity will not help South Africa's quest to rid the country of rogue ideas and disrespect for its citizens.

My experiences in South Africa were adventurous, enlightening, amazing, unfortunate, and sad.

Be thankfull that Bush the Son of God is not in office, the US would have been included in the list of countries allowing for the murder of Gays.

Hi MarkLHolland.

We have since had a presidential election in the U.S., and now Barack Obama is president-- Bush is no longer in office.

So I'm not sure I see the relevance of your comment...? :-)

To Krishna

Everyone is berating the nations who advocated for the removal of the sexual orientation, protection. I was simply pointing out that if Bush the Son was still president the US would have been one of those nations.

This is horrifying, disgusting, completely backwards and inhumane.

Everyday, again and again, the UN shows us its true face. The UN is way gone, much too corrupted and infiltrated to keep existing and functioning.

I think this is a very good quote from the article:

What is the point of the UN if it refuses to uphold its own humanitarian values and declarations?

The point of the UN, today, is corruption, greed, and power.

I recently came across this related article:

South Africa has much to prove at UN top table

Yet all it has been remembered for is its defence of "rogue powers'" and its refusal to support resolutions imposing sanctions on Iran, Myanmar, Sudan, and Zimbabwe. Many in the human rights community and in the US and European diplomatic communities saw these decisions as a betrayal of the spirit of South Africa's own democratic transition and the international support that had facilitated it. Their criticisms defined the general perception of South Africa's performance.

Terrifying stuff. It's disconcerting to see things like this pick up momentum. We can see it in America, in Europe, anti-gay sentiment is well on the rise and people are just simply not acknowledgeing it.
