Placing a Stop Order

If you think the price of a stock you own might begin to decrease, you can attempt to protect profit or limit losses by placing a stop order.

If you're placing a buy stop order, your stop price should be higher than the prevailing market price. If you're placing a sell stop order, your stop price should be lower than the prevailing market price. Stop orders must be placed at least .10 below the current bid or above the current ask.

For complete instructions for placing a stop order, visit Placing Stop Orders in the Knowledge Center.

Comparing Funds with the Sharpe Ratio
You can include the Sharpe Ratio in the Scottrade Mutual Fund Screener or ETF Screener to help you compare the efficiency of the funds you select. Inside your Scottrade account, click on the Quotes & Research tab and choose Mutual Funds or Exchange-Traded Funds from the left column. Under each, you'll find the Screener tool, which helps you find potential investment opportunities that fit your criteria. When choosing your criteria for each screener, you'll find Sharpe Ratio in the Fundamentals section of the "Select Additional Criteria" list on your right.

Finding Preferred Securities
Where are those preferred stocks hiding? If you're looking for a way to trade preferreds in your Scottrade account, check out the CDs & Bonds section under the Trade tab. Even though preferred stock is, well, stock, it actually acts in the market as a debt instrument and is more closely related to a bond.

Show Me the $!

When searching for an Index Quote, don't forget to put "$" before the symbol of the index. For example, if you wanted to find a quote for the Dow Jones Industrial Average, you would type "$DJI" to get a quote for the whole index. The "$" will help you get an Index Quote no matter which Scottrade trading tool you're using - ScottradeELITE, the Scottrade Trading Web Site, Scottrader or Scottrade Mobile.
