Tips of the Trade
When searching for an Index Quote, don't forget to put "$" before the symbol of the index. For example, if you wanted to find a quote for the Dow Jones Industrial Average, you would type "$DJI" to get a quote for the whole index. The "$" will help you get an Index Quote no matter which Scottrade trading tool you're using - ScottradeELITE, the Scottrade Trading Web Site, Scottrader or Scottrade Mobile.
Microsoft Sunsets Windows 2000
Beginning Jan. 1, 2010, Microsoft is discontinuing security updates for its Windows 2000 operating system. As a result, Scottrade will no longer be able to offer support for this operating system.
Please note that users of Windows 2000 may still be able to access the Scottrade Web site and tools such as ScottradeELITE® and Scottrader (streaming quotes); however, if difficulties arise and clients use the Windows 2000 operating system, we will be unable to provide technical assistance.
Scottrade is providing advance notice to allow existing customers to upgrade their operating systems and/or hardware before Jan. 1, 2010, to continue using Scottrade tools as effectively as possible.
There are several reasons that Scottrade can no longer support Windows 2000:
- Microsoft stopped supporting the Windows 2000 operating system on June 28, 2005. As of 2005, Microsoft no longer issues updates.
- Microsoft is discontinuing security updates for this product as of Dec. 31, 2009. In order to make sure our clients are protected, we can no longer safely recommend using this operating system after Dec. 31.
- To provide as much value to our customers as possible, Scottrade must use new technology, which in most cases may not be compatible with Windows 2000.
To determine which operating system you currently use, do the following:
1. Left click on the Start button in the lower left hand corner of the screen.
2. Left click on "Run".
3. Type in "winver".
4. Left click on "OK" to view a pop-up window displaying your current operating system.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. If you have any further questions regarding this matter, please contact your local branch office.

Investors should consider the investment objectives, risks, and charges and expenses of a mutual fund carefully before investing. A mutual fund's prospectus contains this and other information about the mutual fund. Prospectuses are available through our trading site or through a Scottrade branch office. The prospectus should be read carefully before investing. No transaction fee (NTF) funds are subject to the terms and conditions of the NTF funds program. Scottrade is compensated by the funds participating in the NTF program through recordkeeping, shareholder, or SEC 12b-1 fees.
Investors should consider the investment objectives, charges, expense, and unique risk profile of an Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) carefully before investing. Leveraged and Inverse ETFs may not be suitable for long-term investors and may increase exposure to volatility through the use of leverage, short sales of securities, derivatives and other complex investment strategies. A prospectus contains this and other information about the ETF and should be obtained from the issuer. The prospectus should be read carefully before investing.
Margin trading involves interest charges and risks, including the potential to lose more than deposited, or the need to deposit additional collateral in a falling market. Margin Disclosure Statement (PDF) is available for download, or it is available at one of our branch offices. It contains information on our lending policies, interest charges, and the risks associated with margin accounts.
Options involve risk and are not suitable for all investors. Detailed information on our policies and the risks associated with options can be found in the Scottrade Options Application and Agreement, Brokerage Account Agreement, and by downloading the Characteristics and Risks of Standardized Options and Supplements (PDF) from The Options Clearing Corporation, or by requesting a copy from your local branch office.
