Virtual Meet of Newsvine Photographers

Regurgitated comment coming your way.

Read all of comment five, actually.

In the spirit of instant satisfaction, we can hold a virtual conference with text, video, and audio capabilities. All is needed is a webcam and microphone, or one in combination with another. If you don't have the tech, text only is fine too.

The first thing to do is set a date. Start throwing them out.

I'm always busy doing something but my schedule is mostly flexible, except that it has to be between 5:00 and 11:00pm (..unless it's the weekend).

Make sure we specify Time Zone, and I'm definitely interested ... but would just be doing "live chat" no audio/video (if that's a working concept). Most evenings are best for me ... 8:00 - 10:00 PM.

I've had a stickam login for a while, I can't remember if it works ok or not... I just went over there and I do remember, I have some kind of a problem getting the live chat thingy working on my computer. I get some kind of strange error from my computer. I won't be able to participate unless I get that figured out.

Could this not be as simple as going to the Group Home Page and, setting a sequence of who posts, then having those "present" respond? A moderator like Ben could jump in at any time and write ... "All right, we haven't heard from Group Member "X" yet ... say hello, "X".

Group chat ... Yes.

One types, others read, respond, etc. ... we already have, on the Group Home Page, a mechanism for live chat; with you as Moderator, I don't see how we need to re-invent the wheel.

If/when you type, HOLD IT EVERYONE, the chatting stops, you redirect it and we continue. I can't think of an easier way, and, it's already there.

Set the time, each attendee types "here/present" - it comes up with their name and off we go.

I have a mike for my computer so that would work for me, no webcam though :o( Our families keep pestering us about getting one and getting skype so we can talk, but haven't done it yet.

What about a "conference" call? Another group I belong to did that several times. Most eves work for me except weekends right now. I have started a new job and low person on the totem pole gets all the weekend hours. Would love to participate if it works out.

Ben, I guess maybe my problem has resolved itself. I just tried to enter a live chat and it let me in and I was able to post. So maybe I can use Stickam! I didn't hook up the microphone though.

It was some kind of Runtime error that I used to get. I'm not expert when it comes to the computer.

It's a great idea, though, and it looks as if it could be fun, so somebody take a note for me if there's something critical I need to know, please?

Happens with most meetings with more than 4 or 5 people ... but, if Ben were moderator and all agreed that when he says "stop talking," everyone does, it could be a good situation.

Ben, It is the Sonshine room. One of our members has access to a conference call number that we were able to use after hours. Everyone was given the number and a code through the group comments and a time and date for the call. Other than that I am not sure how it worked.

I don't think so ... I think there are services ... everyone on the conference call dials in to a number and somehow is assigned a number or code to enter the conference call ... I'll investigate further.

Those without video/audio capabilities would have to use text only. If you're using a laptop, tablet, etc, some of those have microphones built-in, also, some of the old CRT monitors have microphones built-in (not sure about LCD) so make sure to check.

But, dude, I owe you. I happen to have a stand-alone microphone that I could send you. It's pretty old but I don't think it's been used much (or ever); it won't get any future use. It's just one of those things I'm eying to throw away but don't because I'd rather reuse it.

Stickam is a place where you can do live streaming radio broadcasts (podcast). You can also setup a group chat whereby we would all connect with our webcams and microphones (not required to participate) to see and hear each other.

Or, ... we could just use a Google chat, I think they added an audio/video feature. I'd prefer we use more than just text but if we can't work it out, that's okay. We stand to gain from everyone just getting together at the same time.

Who all has audio/video capabilities? If it's just me, I'm ditching them.

Anyways. I just created a room on Stickam, so if anyone is "live" you can join. I'll keep it up throughout my work day as a demo (I may or may not be around).

  1. Go to Stickam.com
  2. Sign up for an account, if you don't already have one.
  3. Click on Chat Rooms
  4. Sort by date created.
  5. Find "NVP" and click enter. It should load the room.

At the top of the room, you'll see a bunch of squares that say 'click to start video', you would just click one of those spaces and that would start your video and audio. It's pretty straight forward. The test room isn't permanent, so I'll need to recreate it when the time comes. I'll probably use "Newsvine Photographs" as the room name.

ETA: I just found out that I need to work off-site this afternoon, so it'll look like I'm there but I'm probably not.

Rottlady and I just had a discussion via Stickam and we both agree that it was easy and went smooth. Aside from what I appeared to be a little delay, we both agree that using voice is the preferable method, it's just easier to take turns talking that way.

While I'm not sure if we'd have an option like this available to us, the most preferable method for a meet would be sort of like the Vinecast with video. We'd have those that could video conference (has webcam, microphone) and those who would dial in and view the conference.

I wish I had someone to ask and get immediate answers, or directions to them, but I don't. That's the zinger when you communicate in these comments, it's slow. Planning is so much easier when communication isn't being suffocated....

Ben, I don't think Stickam has a call in feature. But I think it's the one to use, it's really easy to set up and actually works. I've been on other sites and had all sorts of problems.

As far as folks that don't have the video/audio capabilities, at least they do have text. If you go to a conference call setup then you run into the problem of not knowing who is talking.

Stickam is the best option, I agree. However, it is important that we get as many "core" members on audio as possible (and by core I mean regular contributors). Right now, it's you and me, and I see above, Soovivers.

I'm still willing to send the extra stand-alone microphone I have to one of those members, if Mac again decides against it. It's an easy setup, just connect it to the only pink plug on the back of your computer. You might have to go into sound controls to take the mute off and/or adjust the volume. One caveat, when I was talking to rottlady, I had to get really close for her to hear. I found that annoying and switched to the webcam.

Ever been in a Yahoo! chatroom with audio? It's sort of like that, only with the video embedded in the chat window. Everyone sees and hears the same thing, they're just participating in different ways.

That is, of course, assuming you have speakers.

ETA: rottlady was commenting at the same time, there's an eight minute difference, I know, but it really took me that long, or longer. Yes, rott and I can coordinate a test run if you need it or you can just log into Stickam ahead of time and join one of the existing chatrooms (it might be really hard to coordinate that between the three of us).

Thank you. The feeling is mutual.

Now, when is this virtual meet supposed to be?

Ben,

Whichever day/time you choose, I will do my best to be there, but, again, the more who try and participate, the more there's a chance someone(s) will not connect (Life or Murphy's Law).

Well, I got in contact with MalMan and asked him if he wanted to join. The original day didn't work for you, and the reschedule doesn't work for him. :( Can someone unwedge me?

I do think the further it is in advance the more people can plan, but I guess that also means they have more time to forget.

I haven't forgotten about this:

I found a free program that allows us to screen share - I had mentioned the capability with GoToMeeting previously, but it isn't free, and actually this review says it's superior to GoToMeeting. I have yet to look into it further, but it looks more promising than the originally planned Stickam.

Nope, unfortunately it didn't happen. I left the comment because I was researching free collaborative tools, found DimDim, and thought I better make sure the program isn't forgotten about for the meet.

Not yet, like I said, I've been researching Internet collaborative tools, not necessarily for the meet, something in the works, but we'll definitely be using some of these in the future.

December?

As long as it is after the 12th and not on the 19th I'm in (depending on work schedule of course).

Hey all ... check out dimdim.com and let me know what you think about using it. It's a web-based application, so no install (but you still have to install a browser plug-in), with text, microphone and telephone options, and also screen sharing - though the free account only allows for the use of one webcam...so much for video, but I suspect no one will really care about that.

Also, it would be really nice to have a co-organizer. ;-)
