Hello everyone. The administrators of Newsvine Photographers are looking to draft a document that clearly defines our group's purpose, guidelines, and expectations of participation. This will serve to inform new members and be sent as a gentle reminder to those who have violated what we have defined in this article.

Basic Guidelines

All seeds are disallowed. Articles may be from any author on Newsvine but at least 1 (one) of the accompanying image(s) must be from a group member.

  • Photographs must be clearly credited by the author in the article.
  • Articles from non-members should be clipped to the group; those authors should not join the group.
  • It's possible to discuss a seed with fellow group members by starting a group discussion, see this article for instructions. Use the 'public' option when starting.

Articles should not contain content that violates the Code of Honor or copyright law, or, compromises a subject, or, is of little content value.

  • Group administrators reserve the right to remove any content that doesn't meet guidelines. When this happens an administrator will create a Newsvine Photographers group discussion, letting you know why your article was removed.

Despite the groups' themes, content may be posted on any day of the week.

  • Articles posted on Wednesday may also be published to Good News Wednesday.  Subject to approval.

Other Guidelines & Information

Per Newsvine User Agreement, you retain all copyright to all original User Content you submit to the Site.  Newsvine/MSNBC may use or alter any content published.  While adding copyright information to articles isn't necessary, it is recommended that you specify how others may use your work.  An alternative to All Rights Reserved copyrights is Creative Commons.  To ensure any theft doesn't happen, it is recommended that images be resized before they are uploaded; digital watermarking is a measure that can be taken as well.

Group Activities

Foto Friday articles are published only on Fridays, however to accommodate time zone differences and time restrictions, it is acceptable to publish on Thursdays, but only after 6:00pm local time. Any photographs are acceptable, as long as they meet the basic guidelines. Be sure to include the foto-friday as tag, or it could be missed by the audience.

Weekend Exposure articles are published on Saturdays and Sundays. Any photographs are acceptable, as long as they meet basic guidelines. Include weekend-exposure as a tag.

The Photo Challenge is issued once per month. Challenges are generally published on the first Thursday of each month.  The guidelines for each challenge will be stated in the article.

Note: Articles not published on Friday should not contain the 'foto-friday' tag.  Articles not published Saturday or Sunday should not contain the 'weekend-exposure' tag.

Note:  Each article should disclose to the reader what we are doing.  Articles done for Foto Friday, Weekend Exposure, and the Photo Challenge should contain a statement such as, 'This article was produced for Foto Friday, a feature of Newsvine Photographers', or, 'This article was produced for the 'The Movies' challenge, etc.

This seems handy, I have only been posting my foto-friday articles to the group. I thought anything out side of that and the challenges had to be about photography. I guess I should have read better. JJ

How would you define "about photography"?

wouldn't that cover things like chosing the subject, why the subject was chosen, how the lighting affects etc. me I'm still working on getting my photos on the computer...something is definitely weirdly going on with my Sony. The flash works but can't get the video back to computer thingy going...

uh, do I have to copyright my images, I'm not really into that, I'm willing to share with anyone that wants it, if they think it's any good lol I'm not that big on getting credit for stuff.

Anyway, just how much group information are you looking for in context with the consitution thing?

wouldn't that cover things like [choosing] the subject, why the subject was chosen, how the lighting affects etc.

This won't be a requirement for publishing to the group. It's not always appropriate and we want to avoid determining and making exceptions. The audience should be provided with information that they would want, who simply want context, not f-stops, lighting, etc.

This is the perfect use for the group discussion feature. Putting photo specs into a separate conversation better organizes the information, makes for a quick reference and hopefully would open up deeper photography discussions.

If anyone doesn't know what group discussions are. Look above the first comment and you should see tabs for every group this article is published to. The number represents how many comments there are. All you need to do is click and post your comment.

Anyway, just how much group information are you looking for in context with the consitution thing?

As much as is needed. Eventually, I'd like to create a quick reference article that details participation guidelines, gives advice on copyright, Newsvine functions, etc.

Ben that would be helpful to those of us new to the posting of photographs to the group. (Like me). And as a personal rule if I didn't take it I don't post it, that has always been my personal stand with very few exceptions (like a family photo my wife has taken of ME for instance)

Why do the articles have to contain a photograph that the arthur has taken? What if someone wants to know or wants to give advice about equipment?

The rest of looks good to me and simple to follow.

Allowing members to post material they don't own is a slippery slope. Everything has its exceptions but there needs to be a valid reason for making them, which is why we're having this discussion, and they need to be detailed before being allowed.

This is what I can detail, if anyone can think of anything else, please add, keep 'er simple:

As it stands now, it's okay to include other people's photographs as long as at least one of them is your own, rottlady's Jewel, KS articles are a good example of this and historical photo essays in general too.

Some articles can be photograph-less, meta-group articles, such as this are one. How-to articles and equipment advice might be another, depending on content.

These were the type of articles that I was thinking about.

Looks okay to me Ben. On the copyright thingy though I'm on the fence about that. Some of my pictures are unique and I'd not want to see them all over the internet but others it doesn't bother me if someone uses them.

What purpose does the copyright serve Ben? Don't people take them anyway and what can we do about it? Unless we have them locked or something. Just a little food for thought.

Soovivers, it is a form of deterrent. It's like a locking your car. Prevents most thieves from messing around. Even in the case of your photos being stolen, at least you have some ground to stand on if you point out that the person has violated the copyright.

Another thing you can do - never post your originals on the web. Just a smaller version.

Thanks for the answer jobs. When I used to post pictures on another site I had the ability to lock or protect them but no option here like that is there?

Posting on Newsvine automatically gives you an 'all rights reserved' copyright but that doesn't stop anyone from doing a right click and save as, and there are ways around websites blocking image downloads, no where is safe.

Like jobs said, posting smaller versions on the web is a good defense, so is watermarking.

If you don't mind people editing/redistributing certain photographs, you need to specify, otherwise 'all rights reserved' is in effect. You can visit the Creative Commons website for more information.

Ben,

This is great.

An addition I can think of for "participation guidelines" is : "Stick to photography. No politics please." After all, it's not like there is a dearth of outlets here on Newsvine to discuss politics ;-) One thing I like about this group is it's always been free of politics and other such controversial stuff. Only a few such places left on Newsvine. This makes it possible for everyone to just enjoy the photos and not be subject to one of those meaningless never-ending back-and-forth that seem to populate the front pages. However, I have noticed in the past couple of months or so, one or two articles that have had some element of politics in the title or in a discussion thread. I think a guideline would help prevent this before it develops into a full-blown problem. Politics is great for driving up traffic but I don't think anyone on this group is here for that. For political photos, there's always the Photography group which seems to be pretty much unregulated.

JMHO,

Politics/religion is a tricky one and something the admins discussed, this is what I said when asked:

If someone were to constantly published, for example, sexually charged articles, I would ask them to defend the practice, the action taken depending on the answer, ignoring the request would result in the trash can being clicked. One trick pony-ism (topic, not subject) reeks of being disingenuous to me, that's not what we're about.

Political and religious articles, there's a fine line. I think they're acceptable if someone took their camera to a political rally, etc, or went to photograph their local church and talked about their beliefs or whatever. It's doubtful that the flame-baiters would put this kind of effort into their articles, but just in case, failure to properly moderate should result in article removal, and continued failure should result in group removal, and again, the one trick pony-ism applies here.

It also should be added that photographs should be related to the content of the article in some way.

What technical information do you need to use this group?

How to format links.
How to upload photographs.
How to insert copyright symbol.
Explanations of image alignments?

Anything else?

This article has been updated to include a 'policy' change of where administrators should leave article removal comments, and to clarify the proper categorization for articles posted to this group. These changes are in green.

Proper categorization has been taken out, and some other minor adjustments (wording and placement of those wordings) have been made to this article. I will incorporate some of the suggestions in these comments (oops). In the meantime, I'm still [always] taking suggestions.
