When the Storm's Away, the Dogs Will Play!

Sat Jan 21, 2012 9:46 PM EST
play, dogs, photography, not-news, jindo, german-shorthair-pointer, rough-housing
By Shelby Davenport

I was outside taking photos of sunsets. Scrappy (my Jindo) was right on my heels, as always.

Chance came up to see what was going on. It didn't take long.....

The exuberance of being able to get out of the house after today's storm made for some play fighting.

Holy cow - Scrappy is going to eat Chance whole!

Problem is....Scrappy took a header and landed in a really wet area. Chance offered apologies.

Dalton cared less. It was cold outside and all he wanted to do was hug his space heater!

We had a pretty good storm blow through Southern California which continued for most of the day. The dogs were in the house most of the time and were getting restless. So, after they ate their dinner, I grabbed the camera and headed outside to catch what I thought would be a great sunset (will post later), taking the dogs with me. All, except Dalton. "Too cold, mom. I'm going back inside!"

If Chance (the German Shorthair Pointer mix) isn't playing with her ball, she is instigating play fights with Scrappy (Jindo), and they can really rough and tumble. Well, they were really full of it tonight.  They had been going at it while I was taking sunset photos when I heard a yelp.  Turns out Scrappy tripped (or something) and landed right in a muddy part of the yard.  I couldn't help laughing my .....off, and he had the most embarrassed look on his face!

When we got back in the house we found Dalton in his favorite spot - curled up by his personal space heater, soaking up the heat.

They're so funny. What great pictures of their fun day! My two will get into like that also. Man can they run fast! And you'd have to be me I guess to know when it's horse play.

Loved the embarrassed look: too cute! Dalton's got it figured out!

Hey if your sunset is from today it's from my sunrise!! How cool would that be?! Ohio to California:) we captured the whole day!!

Sunrise - sunset, yup, you're right. Only thing is, the clouds are coming back your way. So consider that I'm setting you up for more photos!

You're right about knowing whether it's fun play or not. It can get noisy and looks so serious! Thanks, Anna.

Thanks, Piletre. Dalton is such an old putz. He has no undercoat so he lives in his PJ's during the winter. Hates water, hates cold.

Shelby, nice doggie pics. Are you sure Scrappy is 100% dog? That wide open mouth looks a lot like an alligator I used to see in my grandparents' lake once. I'm glad your dogs like having fun with each other.

I'm a touch farther north, a few miles west of Yosemite, and we had a lot of rain, along with thunder and lightning that had my cats scurrying for cover.

Hmmm, I used to hang out with someone who lives in Coursegold. It's beautiful up there.

We are due for another storm tomorrow - I'm wondering if you will get it first?

I was sure surprised when I saw that gaping mouth!

Well, it's raining here right now...

I'm about 60 miles north-ish of Coarsegold, and it's pretty nice in this neck of the woods, as well, except during the summer; in summer, it's really hot, with a substantial chance of forest fires. A couple of years ago, there were actually smoke devils (like dust devils) wandering past my place.

Looks like the dogs are having fun. We had some major rains up here in NorCal too all weekend. The 49ers played the Giants in the rain today. Apparently, this is some weather system coming down from Alaska.

My dogs are acting like they are made of sugar and will melt if they go outside. It's still raining here in Sonoma County. It's ok, though, we need the water!

Absolutely, after the last 3+ months of dry weather, the rains are very much needed.

Funny how dogs react to the rain as compared to cats. :)

My Dalton has the same fears as the Wicked Witch of the West - "I'm mellllllting, I'm melllting...." and get's a poor "woe is me" look. My white Jindo LOVES rain, snow, cold, you name it. He's a happy camper.

Oddly enough, most of my cats wanted out this morning, regardless of the rain. They have to patrol their territories, check for unwary rodents, and that sort of thing. In a few hours, they'll be back to have a snack and get towelled off by Daddy...before heading out again.
