 Mirror and Image 4/28/07 . chapter 65...Woah.
After spending the last three weeks of my life being sucked into this magnificent fic (and sharing with my sister who never had the time to read it) I have finally reached the end.
I suppose my first compliment to you should be the battle sequences. They were fantastic for my image-based brain and had the definate feel of coming from a video game. From Sora's battle with Ryoko to Sora almost losing his soul, to Yami and Yugi's duel, to Sora and Aros facing off, each battle was fresh, incredibly detailed, had a definate "flow" and kept me on the edge of my seat. Fight scenes are difficult for me, so I appreciate your talent and thought that went into each, especially where such a story *requires* many, many battles.
Seeing all the various anime was definately a treat. My sister and I have either seen or heard of every single anime listed. Though, as a critique, the time you spent trying to describe each character that Sora came across was...off. I had a hard time figuring out what character was who until you listed the anime at the end of the chapter. Since you've stated that you have a sequal (yay!), this may be something to work on. I agree that it's difficult to "name" a character when they haven't been properly introduced yet, but given that I never knew what anime you were pulling form, it made identifying various cameos difficult. (As you may have noticed, how many different characters have black hair, blue eyes, and a school uniform? It gets repetative after a while...) Aside from that, seeing ech anime was a real treat. :D Especially given how each person's "powers" were affected or used, such as Yoh and Anna from Shaman King.
Yami and Ranma were superb choices as Sora's party memembers. Yami's intellectual magic and Ranma's hot-headed fighting were good "replacements" for Donald and Goofy. If anything, they didn't even come across as "replacments" but rather, natural allies to have. Yami's card-based magic is versitile, but has it's own limits and Ranma's martial arts is swift and powerful, though he needed the magical boost the Senshi gave him.
Speaking of Yami and Ranma, how they get to know Sora and each other is well paced. You don't go spilling your life's story to someone you just met, but things are revealed over time, especially the parts that Ranma is particularly ashamed of (ie: the curse and the cat-phobia). I'll admit, Sora came off as a little...secretive and while I enjoyed his angsting over the fic, I felt it was out of character. Until you revealed what Aros was. Then everything made perfect sense it was *good* to see Sora be himself again for the ending. (Sora's too happy a person to stay in angst-world for long. Whenever we try to have him angst, he quickly comes out of it, despite our best efforts...)
I enjoyed your choice of worlds. There were, of course, the "popular" worlds that many know of, such as Sailor Moon and Spritied Away, but it was nice to also see some lesser known worlds, such as Trigun or Tenchi Muyo (What happened to Ryoko and Darien by the way? Didn't see them in the end...). It was a good way to give experienced otaku like my sister and I (who have been otaku for over ten years...) a chance to remember all the good stuff from before anime exploded into pop culture. It is also a good way to show newer otaku some of the older anime that is so great. (I never cease to be amazed when people who claim to be otaku have never heard of things like Gatchaman, Speed Racer, or Lum...) As such, where Yami was from the more recent YugiOh, Ranma was from the older Ranma1/2. Another good mix of older and newer.
I am proud to say that you had me crying when Riku, Kairi, and Sora were finally *together*. The three of them are such a cohesive unit, but so often Kairi's left behind because she doesn't fight or Riku is missing/on the dark side. To see the three of them come together after so long apart (two years!) the reunion was well worth the sixty-chapter wait.
I shall now go emmerse myself in Of Many Hearts.
