This is perfection. I freaking love it.

I enjoyed reading this fanfic a lot. Maui is a very interesting character, and it seems like most of the Moana fanfics I've read feature him as the protagonist.

The one problem with Maui in the movie is that whilst his character arc is compelling, there were a couple of important moments which were cut so that Moana could remain at the centre of the story. We see Maui return when Moana needs him most, but we aren't really told why. However, this fanfic tries to plug that gap, and it does a decent job.

The best aspect of this story is seeing Maui interact with Mini-Maui. The rebellious tattoo is as expressive as ever, and it's interesting to find out that Maui can essentially hear it's thoughts. By giving Mini Maui an expanded role, this story really highlights the fact that he represents Maui's voice of reason.

Aside from his powers, Maui is an interesting character because of all his internal contradictions. He pulled islands out of the sea and controlled the sun, but wonders if he's worthless. He does good for the human race in order to be appreciated, but his attempt to provide the greatest gift possible for them causes untold damage. He's impulsive but street-smart, he's confident on the outside and pessimistic within... Maui is a three-dimensional character, and the contradictory aspects of his personality are all emphasised here. The most intriguing part of this story is Maui's guilt over his desicion to steal the heart of Te Fiti, as he wonders if people will ever accept him again after this disastrous misjudgement.

This story is a simple one, but it builds up to a strong climax. Maui's realisation that Moana cares about him fuels his self-esteem, but it also triggers another, more important, epiphany - he cares about Moana and wants her to be safe. The dialogue is effective (it feels natural and you can really imagine Maui saying it) and the descriptions of his thoughts are handled really well, especially as his initial anger at Moana is replaced with fear for her safety, triggering his desicion to go in and help her fight Te Ka.

Overall, this is a very strong fanfic, as it gives us some memorable insights into the thoughts and feelings of Maui, and allows us to spend more time with him and Mini Maui.

Literally the most warm and beautiful thing I've read today! Thank you so much for writing it you master piece! :D

Yeah, this was the one part that should have showed up in the movie-it felt a little forced to have Maui desert Moana only to suddenly return at the last second when she truly needed him without an explanation. Sure, it's been done to death, but your interpretation of it is spot on perfect. I also like the little italics so we can "hear" what Mini Maui is telling himself.

Wow...I cried.

Are you going to do a Maui x Moana story later on? Or at least a very close platonic story of them?
