I generally do not read TBBT fanfics but just because of this particular story I now need to wander the fandom. I must say I never thought about what the can-opener thingie could have done to Sheldon's career or that Sheldon coud ever be something of the cuddling variety so thank you for these eye-openers. Your Penny and Sheldon are really cute. And considering the amount of thinking and preparation and battleplans and all that jazz that Sheldon invests in paintball, I can totally see him running around hacking on people with mock-weapons. And the trebuchet was simply made of awesome. Congratulations on a very well done job!
I just wanted to say again that this is pretty much my favorite Big Bang Theory story. It is by far the one I re-read the most. I went through it again tonight after the new episode. Once again, fantastic work and I truly love this story.
I started off reading this on the laptop, decided I must go to bed and then damn it, I ended up finishing off reading it using the internet on my phone! :D But it was worth it. Two months ago I'd never seen an episode of TBBT. A few random episodes later I thought "hmm, what about Sheldon/Penny?" And now here I am, completely immersing myself in fic, ignoring canon (because, quite frankly, even I as a new fan can see how ridiculous it is!) and finding myself shipping these two more and more every day.
What does this have to do with your brilliant story? Well, everything, really. I probably can't write anything coherent (I never can with these reviews!) and I'm probably echoing all that has already been said but I thought I'd give my two cents anyway.
This fic is about so much more than just Sheldon/Penny. After I read it, it stayed with me, and I know that's the mark of a good story- when it plays on your mind for days and you feel bereft almost once you have finished it. Like someone else has already said, this was a story about life, and growing up. I especially liked the change in the friendship between the boys. I too thought that their betrayal in the Arctic was dealt with too quickly… and then there was the episode with Kripke when he sabotaged Sheldon’s radio interview and all the guys did was just laugh at him. You’ve taken a really interesting angle, and it’s believable that the other three use him as their scapegoat- “thank God I’m not Sheldon.”
I also like how you described the 4 of them as having been thrown together, simply because they didn’t fit in anywhere else. After everything that happened in this fic, I admit it was sad to see them so broken, and I found myself hoping they could work on the fragments of their friendship. Because even though they did treat him badly, I think they all realised this in their own way and it’s this, as well as their shared inability to fit in anywhere else, that could keep them together. They’ve been through a shared experience and yeah, they’ve grown up and realised that they’ve all done some pretty crap things but I couldn’t help but feel sad that they could never patch things up. So I’m glad there was some sort of glimmer of hope there.
Leonard… well. I don’t actually hate him, per se, in the show, but after reading this I noticed a lot of things that he does get away with simply because he’s Leonard, and he’s Penny’s boyfriend, and he’s supposed to be the endearing one. It made me think that in canon, they play down Leonard’s bad points in favour of playing on/playing up Sheldon’s weirdness, in order to make him look like a royal pain in the ass so of course it’s not Leonard’s fault if he snaps and plays tricks on his so-called best friend. And because you pointed these things out, it really has made me take notice in the show of just how unsuited (is that even a word?) Leonard and Penny are to each other. It is too forced.
Penny and Sheldon, however. Like someone else has said, you didn’t go for the opposites attract thing, which I like because I’ve often thought well, okay, so they are opposite but they are also very similar. When you wrote the scene of Sheldon being so at ease at the party with Penny’s friends, and then contrasted it with him being so out of place at the university, I thought, THIS. THIS is the reason he and Amy don’t work, and the reason he and Penny do work. Chemistry. Not samey, both highly intelligent, a little bit weird etc etc. How does that challenge him? It doesn’t. It doesn’t encourage him to change, or evolve as Sheldon would say. What you’ve written shows how he is capable of small changes. Stepping out of his comfort zone slightly and having someone there to support him. Someone to call him on his craziness and be there for him and just plain old understand him. Gah I can’t explain it very well! How can you explain the chemistry that we see on our screens? We all know it’s there, right? !
At the end of this fic, I was left thinking about how everyone had been on a journey, and had ‘found’ themselves. I liked what they found. Even Leonard. And the epilogue was perfect, because it showed just how far they had come.
My absolute favourite line of the whole fic was "Only physical laws are constant, Leonard. Everything else is subject to alteration." I thought it described Sheldon, and Sheldon/Penny, perfectly.
Oh and I just want to add- I liked how you wrote in the present tense. It was more immediate and more real, and it felt like you were getting inside their heads. You kept them all perfectly in character which just makes me question yet again why it is that Penny and Sheldon aren’t together in the show!
I’m sorry this is such a long review. I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed it, and how it made me think. You are very, very talented! Thank you for this ‘fan-fix’, because it really did fix things in my head!
I'm loving the first four chapters! Making them go to a LARP event never occurred to me, but it definitely fits the guys' type of nerdiness. Especially since Sheldon is often portrayed as the 'evil mastermind' to LHR's 'minion' =). Penny's competitiveness also made her a very believable warrior queen.
As a side note, I noticed you made a star trek reference as they were leaving the event; "...If he issues kal if fee, the little man is toast." I just wanted to point out that according to that story line, it is actually the female of the soon-to-be-married pair that has the right to issue the challenge, and can choose herself or another to be her champion in the fight.
If 'he' in that line was actually a typ-o for 'she', my apologies =).
I can't describe how much I love how you developed the plot and the characters, while even sticking to their most attributed characteristics. I simple love this fic and I want to give you props for writing an amazing one as well :D
Big Bang Theory Fanfiction? Stupid. Ridiculous. Or so I thought until I started reading your story. I remember laughing about having found this.. "OMG someone actually wrote a BBT fic? Shipping Sheldon and Penny?" And now I've finished your story (in 24 hours, by sneaking longer breaks at work and staying up till 4am reading) and now I just want to say... That was good! Any doubters out there, just read it. Thanks!
I've reviewed this more than once already, but I reread it and I feel I ought to again.
No other Sheldon/Penny fic has ever really put in the time developing the two into a couple. To be together, they must first change themselves, something that you not only included, but made the single most important part of this entire story. I'm sick of Penny as a stupid alcoholic - you write her as an intelligent woman who's made some bad decisions, finally deciding to have a better life. Sheldon is completely and utterly himself, but he willingly decides to change that. Sure, he's never "normal", but he chooses to become more than a man afraid of change, and watching his thought process creep along to epiphany is stunning and beautiful. On the outside, it's a series of seemingly mundane events. It's what's happening behind the scenes that makes it wonderful.
The prose is just gorgeous. The vocabulary requires me to frequently consult the dictionary while reading, and as a result I've learned quite a lot. The style, while not "correct", flows naturally and sticks with you. I can easily quote dozens of lines, it's so memorable.
Strange and Charmed is the perfect follow-up. With the end of TPP, only snippets from their new lives are really necessary. I'm eagerly awaiting a Sheldon meeting the parents and/or Penny meeting Meemaw chapter. I'd also love to see your take on them farther into the future. How does the wedding go? Does Sheldon ever get his Nobel? Do they ever have children? Do Raj, Leonard and Howard have happy endings?
Thank you for the excellent writing. As always, I hope to hear more from you in the future.
Wow! Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed this story. My husband and I are only now watching season 2 of TBBT and though I've seen bits of later seasons thanks to reruns and basic cable seeing everything from beginning to end is gratifying.
The first episode my husband saw was The Panty Polarization and at the end all he could say about Sheldon and Penny was 'oh yeah, no tension there', and it's nice to find someone else who obviously sees things in a similar fashion.
I hope you'll write more and enjoy it just as much.
I've never really been into Sheldon/Penny before, but after an epic TBBT marathon, I'm coming round to the idea. This is the first fic I've read, and I LOVED it. I think I've found a new OTP thanks to the fact that you kept them completely in character and the plot was plausible! :D
I had approached getting to know BBT fanfiction with the same vigour I always seem to when an obsession is new and raw and consuming. But, this story - although I read it in two long sittings - has been something quite different. I had been searching for the one story that defined this ship for me, that one story against which all other fanfics will be measured. And I found it, suddenly, without much warning.
All day at work my eyes were burning because of a late night of reading. I kept a window open with your words on my computer.
But more than feeling that you quite simply wrote the characters as they were meant to be - surpassing the show - I found your writing to be a source of incredible comfort. They were the reminder that things change and that you need to be a complete human being before you can be with someone. It was what I needed to remember - and it was about life, not just being a fan.
So, I want to give you an honest, heart-felt thank you for this story, which I know I will return to many times.
Out of all the fan-fiction stories I have read about Sheldon&Penny;, This one takes the cake and everything! I love the story and the addition of the other characters! I especially love the ending! You couldn't have ended it better!:) I laughed and cried and fell in love with all the characters, especially Penny! I believe this story deserves a two thumbs up and a very loud BAZINGA!
