Reviews for A Badass ProMaiko Argument
Guest chapter 1 . 4/7
I was a Maiko originally when I was watching the series but fanfic came and Zutara really pulled me in but now as I revisit fanfic and gave Maiko a chance, I found that I'm really favoring the Maiko side again and for good this time I think. My reasons? All the points you enumerated! So thankyou so much! I realized that Zuko and Katara are too much alike. While I was enchanted with their Romeo and Juliet esque plotline, it came with a bit of cracks. Zuko's a hothead and his need to be everything in his control and plan will clash with Katara's overbearing attitude and need to be right. Individually theyre great and the idea that a prince of fire and water princess love story is so tempting but I don't see either party backing down from an argument (should it arise and it will. They're water and fire remember?) And no one would settle for a compromise. And we all know how compromise is important in any relationshop. With Mai though, I really see her as the fire lady. Zuko's other half. Katara may be Water Princess but Mai was his Fire Queen. I can see Mai supporting Zuko in rebuilding the fire nation. Her strong and admiteddly dark and silent personality compliments Zuko's loud one. Zuko is quick to anger and Mai is the only one who can deal with him calmly and set him straight. I see wonderful character development for each of them as they grow in their relationship. Mai expresses herself more, comes out of her shell, learns to truly love and form relationships. Zuko learns to control his temper (w/c is his biggest flaw for me at least), learns patience and be more firm and sure of himself as fire lord.

Wow. Got off on a rant there but still mad respect for Zutara fans! You guys write amazing fics by the way.

Yaaay! Finally someone who ships Maiko.
I actually read a kind of dissappointing article about how mai and zuko can't be together because the two of them don't talk enough, you know, not enough soul-connection or whatever. And I kind of agree with that. I wished they had spent a bit more time developing their relationship, but what we got was still awesome.
Plus they had so much more to concentrate on and now the comics have depressed me even more. But I'm hoping they'll get together again in a believable way aka they talk to each other.
Anyway your points are really nice (esp the one about fire and daggers. That was brilliant! ).
Thanks for the logic and a fun essay!

THIS. IS. PERFECT.

You nailed it. I am SO sick of hearing anti-Maiko rants! .
BowWow chapter 1 . 7/14/2017
This was actually fun to read. I'm binging the show now after not seeing it in years, and I'd just like to thank you for being a sort of peacemaker xD I wasn't a fan of Maiko when I first watched it, but that's mostly because, as you pointed out, her character and their relationship is established in sliver of time. Now that I'm older, I find their relationship incredibly funny and incredibly perfect. Still a fan of Zutara, but I feel like it's pretty difficult to argue Zuko and Mai weren't made for each other (since the creators literally made them for each other).

I like how you present their relationship, and I have to agree about the romance-the scene on The Boiling Rock when she betray Azula to save Zuko absolutely floored me. Loyalty is such a big part of the show and such a huge thing to the Fire Nation that it was an absolutely pivotal moment in the entire series. That was when you could see Azula falling, and thereby the Fire Nation falling.

I still enjoy Zutara, but Maiko's pretty badass. Basically, I just wanted to say thanks for being a normal person that gets annoyed by ship-bashing, but doesn't mind other ships. You're a respectful human being that like respect in return, and I thoroughly enjoy that.

Keep writing, and keep enjoying life! Have a good day-you're awesome, and thank you again for writing this!

This essay on the logic of Maiko was very well thought out and written. You gave plenty of excellent evidence to support the points, and at no point did I feel attacked. To add to this argument, take it or not, I noticed very few Zutara scenes/moments, and many Maiko scenes and I watch all media with shipping goggles. It was only after reading fanfiction that I learned of Zutara, and even after watching the series again recently, I failed to notice much, if any, Zutara. To be clear, I oppose neither ship, but Maiko seemed much better and more adorable/sweet. (Personally, I love the idea of Katara ending up with no one, and being a strong, independent woman, but that's just me, I guess.)
Reviewer chapter 1 . 4/4/2017
Hey there. I've read it this far, and I...uh, don't hate it? Not that I would go so far to call these Logic Bombs. It is not totally unbiased, but that'd be an unreasonable expectation since everyone is biased to some extent when it comes to their favourite characters and ships. You could have improved your persuasion by using less hyperbole and all caps, as well as citing examples from the show to highlight cases that support your points. (Assuming, of course, that this is meant to be a persuasive essay, and not just something to relief your stress from being hounded by overzealous shippers and haters. Which would be totally understandable. In general, there is little point in trying to convince someone you are right, when they've already decided the opposite.)
Far be it from me to excuse people from attacking others for the sake of fictional characters, but to be frank, all characters and by extension their relationships are open to valid criticisms. Everyone has the freedom to support the ships they like, but people sometimes have valid reasons for not supporting a ship other than "because it gets in the way of their fave", which I hope you may consider when I present an argument of my own.
The balance of personality traits, or mutual loss should not be the defining characteristics of a romantic relationship. In fact, I find the concept of "opposites attract" rather sketchy in and of itself. But I had hoped that your analysis would broach a deeper level than the superficial logic fallacies thrown at you by haters, who can only rant on and on about what's amazing about their OTP that their rivals are lacking.
Sadly, the reason that Maiko (or at least the way it's written canonically) doesn't work for me has nothing to do with the above. There is zero evidence in the show to suggest that Mai has, at any point in time, believed the Fire Nation's conquest to be wrong, much less taken steps to amend this like Zuko did. This is such an intrinsic part of Zuko's character that it cannot be ignored for any important relationship in his life, including romantic ones. In its lack of moral expectation, and moral development for Mai, the show has done her character a great disservice. Should a good character be dispassionate in the face of injustice? Or worse, be reduced to someone that takes up her love interest's morals and principles, but has none to show for herself? There is no denying that Mai had been a willing, if misguided participant in the Fire Nation's agenda. The show is hard on Zuko for the mistakes he made in life, and it's a good thing. If it had been harder on Mai, she could have been a much better character.
This is something I at least hope fans will take care to address when writing Maiko in their fanworks, because in a world full of independent female characters with strong principles they are willing to fight for, canon has been very disappointing on that account. A fic that has done well in this aspect would be "Bringing Out the Blue", which delivers the canon ships far more convincingly than the original. In this story, Zuko and Mai communicate and share a connection on a level they never did in canon. It is specifically addressed that Mai needs to act by what she believes to be right, not just by Zuko's principles because she loves him.
However, looking purely at their canon characterizations, Toko, Zukaang (with adult Toph and Aang, naturally), Zukka, and yes, Zutara are all ships I enjoy. These people have fought together for a good cause, out of common principles: the restoration of harmony in a war-torn world.
But not Maiko. No amount of "romantic drama", "opposites attract" and "forbidden love" in this world could hope to bridge an ethical dissonance.

Hi, I found this and it's nice to see there are other people who found the points you made as obvious as me, thanks you for writing this
NightBringer325 chapter 1 . 3/15/2017
logic what a rare and beautiful gift sadly i doubt the crazies will end with this but its nice all the same and personally i ship Maiko and for the Super Zutarians i have a cannon you dont.
DrWhy chapter 1 . 11/18/2016
Yoo thanks for the eloquent arguments.. but I still have a problem
Okay, I ship Maiko and Kataang. But recently, i noticed that , from a literary pov, zutara is actually... Pretty... Good?
The problem is that they're both clichés - the enemy-turned-lover and childhood-crush . And since katara was introduced first...
I think I would have been a zutara shipper,if not for ba sing se. I shipped them in the catacombs. And then I didn't. I can't articulate why, but I just.. can't stand zutara anymore? (Even though I'm actually okay with zukka)
Thoughts?

Loved this, loved the reasons, and even though I like jetko more, maiko, especially after this argument is definitly right up there.
Ginny A Heron chapter 1 . 8/30/2016
This was really good! I enjoyed reading it (especially the science lessons!) and I love Maiko :)
Convenient Alias chapter 1 . 8/27/2016
I enjoy seeing people defend Maiko. Compared to the Zutarians out there, people who really ship Maiko and not just by default are rare, but they're one of my favorite couples. They do indeed complement each other very well, and their arc was awesome. I enjoyed reading. :)
Tete93 chapter 1 . 6/23/2016
Hi!
I don't ship Maiko nor Zutara (I'm actually a Jin/Zuko shipper) but I'm in love with your essay. I'm deeply annoyed by all the Maiko haters in this fandom (and like 95% of said haters are Zutarians). Here you made a strong argument againts the Maiko hate and for that I will favorite this fic.
Iceblade chapter 1 . 6/12/2016
THANK YOU! at least SOMEONE agrees with me! I am a Maiko shipper with every ounce of my life and all these reasons of why Katara isn't the one for Zuko is true!
Guest chapter 1 . 3/24/2016
I have to say, your logic bombs are quite informative. I especially liked the steam comparison thing (you know what I mean) and how you pointed out the whole 'Romeo and Juliet both die' part, everyone always forgets that and it annoys the crap out of me. I adore Maiko too, Zutara would just... Fizzle out. Sorry Super Zutarians.
