OxEyed chapter 1 . 9/2/2013 Oooh I don't even know where to start You've got a great gift for atmosphere and setting: I hate writing descriptions, so I'm always impressed when I get these excellently-planned out images and metaphors that places the reader exactly where they need to be. Even more impressive to me was that a single sentence was all it took for me to picture a Vermeer, especially since it's a painting that doesn't exist and art history isn't my strong suit. (my thought process was "oh sounds like that guy who painted girls and did that thing with the light)". My pride turned into horror when I realized that Kaiba was going to use Cyndia against Pegasus-as my first "favorite" character, I still have this very strong protective instinct to protect him from that kind of heartbreak-and I knew that if I had to read that conversation, I was going to end up flipping a table. I didn't (literally) flip a table, but I had a really strong emotional response-the get up and walk away kind-and as much as it hurt, I have to tip my hat to you for being able to provoke that kind of reaction for a pairing I've never really been fond of. And I DID NOT SEE THAT KISS COMING I mean geez I just kind of gaped at my computer for a while trying to recover from my surprise. But you handled it marvelously. It was surprising, but it never felt out of place or out of character, so I gotta hand you major props. So yes, this was an absolute pleasure to read. I'm looking forward to seeing what you'll produce in the future. Good luck! |
Red Wings chapter 1 . 9/1/2013 If the real Seto and Pegasus were to read this, both would surely gag, throw up, choke, and the former would likely be planning for your murder. Otherwise, this is one spectacular piece of fanfiction. Kaiba's change of heart on Pegasus was very believable, even if it seemed too quick to me. Seto does not forgive or forget wrongs done unto him or Mokuba. |
Animom chapter 1 . 9/1/2013 I begin with a statement of fact: this is one of the most beautifully written stories I've ever read in this fandom, and one of the very very few I expect to re-read. I had a hunch it was going to join my favorites, as I adored it from the very beginning: the trip, the description of the island and the "joyless servants," the dry, distinctive Kaiba-voice ... all this had me smiling after only a few hundred words. By the time "the boys" appeared your characterizations were so congruent with the way I see these two that reading it was like putting on a very comfortable pair of velvet slippers. "This was just Pegasus, grandstanding as usual." was the first line that made me nod: Iyup, that's him right there/I I said to myself, and then there was "It annoyed Kaiba to think that Pegasus knew things he did not, no matter how useless that knowledge might have been." and I smiled some more. And then, oh my, you had the discussion of the Vermeer, and "What looks perfect on the surface is completely different when viewed in detail," and my heart went pittypat. Subtle, layered characterization via skilled writing for these two is so rare: I was enthralled. The unraveling plot was plausible and suspenseful; Kaiba's "exploration and discovery" (I won't ruin it for those who read reviews before story) added yet another layer of meaning to your well-chosen title, and ... well, the only other thing I can say is that, although I knew where you were taking us (from the tags and the gradual shifts in perception and all), I never expected to be delivered with such grace and assurance. Bravo! |
reminiscent-afterthought chapter 1 . 8/28/2013 Wow, this was long, but definitely worth the read. I really like the development that you portray of both characters, bringing in little aspects of the canon and knitting them into something more profound. The Vermeer was a very nice touch, particularly how it ends up as an instigator and then fades to the background, only to show up again right at the very end. The relationship between the two was nicely drawn out as well; I'm somewhat glad it took so many words, although it must have taken you a lot of hard work to write it. Just one thing I noticed when reading: ["You went out in it," Kaiba pointed out. "Anything you can do, I can do too." "Better not say things like that," said Kaiba, amused. "You'll tempt me to start doing things just to see if you'll do them too." "I said I can," said Kaiba, with great dignity. "I didn't say I would."] - I imagine at least one of those should be a "Pegasus" in at least one of those three lines (the second one I think) otherwise Kaiba's just talking to himself. :) And being amused at himself. |
Erik's Champion chapter 1 . 8/27/2013 This was so good! I loved the plot structure and the dialogue is perfect |
