A/N: You know what, I'm going to try, damn it. I'm going to try to finish this. Maybe I can finish this under 10 years :P
I never really knew the way,
So my mind kept on spinning.
She just kept staring out at the bay. Starfire had her knees to her chest, her arms wrapped protectively around her legs. As the water lapped against the dock, she tried to focus on the sound. The sound of water would soothe her, bring her back to her old self. It needed to bring her back.
Her communicator was off, laying in the dirt next to her. Listening to Robin- she couldn't handle it at the moment. She closed her eyes, resting her forehead on her knees. She was no help to the Titan's now- she couldn't fly, she couldn't feel- she couldn't bring herself to look for the Chronoton detonator anymore. She wondered briefly if anyone had made it back to the Tower yet. "How long have I been sitting here?" She spoke softly to herself, bringing her head back up, sniffling, swallowing a lump in her throat. The Tower was in sight. Turning the power on, she checked her communicator, 3:45- over an hour.
The breeze coming off from the bay water was cold against her skin, causing goosebumps to rise over her exposed flesh. But the chill didn't bother her; she was cold all the way through to her bones. Starfire was still numb. She was afraid that if she tried to feel any emotions, she'd be stuck on sadness forever. All she wanted was for her friends to be back together- safely, at the Tower. Quickly turning her head to the side, she stopped that thought- she didn't need to think about her friends and whether they were safe or not…
Rubbing her hands up and down her arms, she turned her attention back to the Tower. The Tower used to bring her such joy whenever she saw it. Looming in the distance, it had always been a beacon to her, a comforting sign. It was her home, she thought with a sniffle, it had been her home for so many years. Taking a deep breath, she sealed her eyes shut again. "How am I to get better?" She whispered. "How?" She opened her eyes to the sight of Titan's Tower again. Determination lit like a spark inside of her. The Tower. She needed to get back there; if it was the last thing she did.
Standing, she focused on Titan's Tower. "That is it," She told herself. Home. Raven scowling at Beast Boy for leaving his dirty socks throughout their home. Her old friend, Silkie, and the mayhem he caused when he was home. Cyborg eating cereal until his stomach ached. The smell of the kitchen when Cyborg made the pancakes. Raven allowing her to enter her room occasionally. Robin. Robin, when he let her in; when she could get past his walls and truly see him. Home. Robin. Robin.
Her heels lifted off the ground and she inhaled, eyes closing. "Home. I am going home." Starfire repeated those feelings over and over as she crossed the bay to get to the Tower. To get back home.
Cyborg couldn't shake the feeling that something was off.
Considering the past 24 hours had been nothing but off, he just couldn't ignore this. The vibrations he was feeling underfoot were rhythmic. "There's no way those are buildings collapsing." He spoke to himself as he rounded a corner.
He didn't bother looking at his forearm, his scanners weren't picking up the Chronoton detonator, so they were most likely busted.
Cyborg was done; he was exhausted, hungry, physically and emotionally drained. He couldn't help find the detonator now. All he wanted was to get home to Titan's Tower. Despite the exhaustion, he couldn't ignore the nagging feeling in his gut. Something was off. And if this whole thing had taught him anything at all- he was going to listen to his fucking gut instinct.
He was on Jump Street now, on the north side of the city. South Jump Street led to the Bay, he had about 12 blocks to go before he met with the section of Jump Street that went along the shore of the bay.
The city was eerily quiet- save for those suspicious vibrations. There were no traffic sounds: honking horns, speeding trucks or screeching of brakes. No people on the sidewalks or vendors selling knock off watches on the corner. It irked him to see the city like this. To see something usually bustling with life, to having been reduced to this- this death like state- was unnerving.
A pulse suddenly reverberated under his feet. The vibrations felt like they were coming from the Southeast section of the city- but he wasn't sure. He rubbed a hand over his face; his gut told him to check out what was going on in the Southeast, but his head told him to get home. Part of him just wanted to get back to the Tower so he could leave. The past few days were a nightmare; and he wanted to put it behind him- physically far, far behind him. If he survived, that is. Cyborg swallowed a lump in his throat. This thing with the detonator wasn't over- and he wasn't sure if he and the other Titan's would survive.
"No," He shook his head. Looking down the street, he became determined. "I just gotta get to the Tower." He cracked his neck and rolled his shoulders. "You can do this," pepping himself up- he started to jog up South Jump. "You've got to fucking do this."
General Immortus smiled wickedly at Raven and Beast Boy, the two turned to face him and saw his army behind him. "This ends now."
Beast Boy turned to look at Raven, and though she lacked emotion on the outside, when she wrapped her hand around his- he knew she was scared. "I've got you, Rae," Her amethyst eyes softened when she turned to look up at him. She nodded once.
Originally- she hated Beast Boy. The early years of the Titans proved to be extremely difficult for the group, especially Raven. Beast Boy was annoying, loud and obnoxious, overly excitable. His energy was too much for her. She needed her space and he never seemed to understand that- no matter how many times she sent him flying off the roof of the Tower.
Over time, Raven learned to accept him. It took them a while, but they found a system. He learned her quirks; when to back off and back down. The two of them learned balance; it was a delicate balance, but it worked.
When Starfire had told them she wanted to live with Robin during this weird "vacation", Raven was scared. She didn't know how this could possibly work- with two people so different. But somehow they clicked- despite her closed off nature and his general goofiness.
Taking a deep breath, she knew this was probably the last time she would speak to Beast Boy. Watching his profile, she swallowed a lump in her throat. She had so much she wanted to tell him. There was still so much she wanted to learn about Beast Boy, but they wouldn't get that chance now. They were out of time. With so much to say, she decided on the simplest and most meaningful. "I love you," She spoke in a whisper.
His green eyes smiled at her and she released his hand, turning back to the army of robotic drones General Immortus had amassed behind him and Cinderblock.
Beast Boy watched as Raven closed her eyes. His mindset was let Raven concentrate and try to gain as much strength as she could before they fought. He knew killing Madame Rouge had taken almost everything out of Raven. Any power she could muster now would be a last ditch effort.
This was all on him now.
Beast Boy swallowed, taking in the sheer volume of the army in front of him. He wasn't stupid, he knew the odds of him and Raven surviving this on their own: zero. The last couple months had been surreal. Living with Raven in normalcy was something he enjoyed and didn't regret a minute of it. Well, maybe that time she made him sleep on the couch. A corner of his mouth turned up at that memory. Beast Boy thought he was lucky to love her. He was man enough to know that. "I love you, too." He spoke quietly, turning his head back to give her a small smile.
Beast Boy took a small step forward. "Is this all you got?" He shouted at Immortus. Why not play the cocky card in the end?
"I think it will do," General Immortus snickered from his post. "Versus the two of you, how much damage could you do?"
"I think you'd be surprised," Beast Boy said as he slipped off his flannel shirt, stepping out of his sneakers. Pulling his shirt over his head, he turned his head slightly back towards Raven. "I'm a lucky man to have gotten to love you, Rae." Unbuttoning his jeans, he stepped out of those and transformed into a tyrannosaurus rex.
Raven took a deep breath as everything seemed to start all at once. Gathering her strength, she repeated her mantra as it was drowned out by the deafening roar Beast Boy's tyrannosaurus form bellowed.
Cinderblock stormed towards Beast Boy while half the drones started to swarm Beast Boy, the others charged towards her.
"Azerath, Metrion, Zinthos," she was encased in her black energy, the drones smashing into it from all sides. She was trying to keep her breathing even, her strength was waning and she knew she couldn't keep this up for long. Raven didn't really have a plan; try to hold them off as long as she could, she supposed.
Her arms stretched out in front of her, her elbows locked, jaw clenched. She swallowed, concentrating on her breathing. For a brief second, she allowed herself to feel exhausted. Which she truly was. How long could she hold them off?
Let me out. A soft growl slid across her mind.
Ignoring the voice, she fired a blast of kinetic energy out that sliced through about 6 drones to her right. They collapsed, broken to the ground, but more just filled in their place. A barrage of mechanic limbs beat down on her weak force field. It grew smaller each minute.
You said it yourself, how much longer do you think you're going to keep this up?
"Stop it." Raven snapped, shaking her head and firing out another blast. This time, only 4 drones were affected.
A robotic drone had managed to climb on top of her force field and was pounding its fist near her head. The banging sound was like nails driving into her skull. She clenched her teeth, forcing more energy around her, more energy that she didn't have.
Beast Boy roared loudly near her. She looked over her shoulder to see him transform into a triceratops, pushing hard against Cinderblock with dozens of drone's all over him.
You're getting weaker. Let me out, Raven. Rage, her most dangerous emotion's voice was loud and clear in her mind. Clanging of chains echoed through her consciousness, causing her to wince.
"You would destroy everything," Raven spoke through gritted teeth. Sweat was on her brow. Sending a dark energy blast, only 3 drones fell this time, and more were weighing her down.
Isn't that the point? Let me out. Rage demanded. Raven's hands shook, she was straining too hard. Let. Me. Out.
Another cry from Beast Boy drew her attention. Cinderblock was gaining power over Beast Boy, he was almost completely engulfed with drones. They were clawing at him, pulling him down, there was blood too.
"No." She shook her head. The last of her kinetic energy barely covered her body now against the drones, who were pounding and pushing against her. Let me out! Rage demanded again.
A different kind of sound erupted from Beast Boy. Raven turned to see the changeling try to morph into something else- but couldn't, the drones were too strong. Cinderblock was too strong. They were over powering him- he wouldn't make it. She realized with horror. This was it- they were going to die.
Not if I can help it. Let me out! Rage cried, the sound of chains clanging piercingly in Raven's head. She clutched her head in pain from the noise. Though the next howl from Beast Boy ripped through her like a blade. She couldn't let him die, not here- not now. Not Beast Boy. "No. No," His strangled sounds sent her over the edge.
LET. ME. OUT!
They sent her right over the edge where Rage needed her to be. LET ME OUT! Rage bellowed, and Raven obeyed.
She felt power surge through her, and she let Rage take over. Her black energy expanded, sending a multitude of drones flying away from her, smashing into buildings, and crumbling around her.
Dark power shot from her hands, destroying General Immortus' army all around her. She was headed towards Beast Boy, she sent drone's flying off his dinosaur back. Tendril's of her magic reached out, grabbing drones from around him and snapping them like twigs.
Cinderblock bellowed and turned his attention towards her. "Enough." She demanded, her voice deeper, sinister, taken over by Rage. Rage clouded her vision. She flung her hands out in front of her, large black energy claws appeared, mimicking her arms. She swung her hands in towards her chest, the claws latching onto either side of Cinderblock's head.
His stone arms tried to grab onto the claws encasing his head, but couldn't; they went right through her magic.
"You were right, Immortus," Rage sneered. "This ends now." She roared, sending her arms out to her sides. The sinister claws ripped Cinderblock in two, tearing him down the middle. Like he wasn't made of stone, like his body was made of Styrofoam. He crumbled before her, she smiled eerily at her prey.
Breathing heavily, she suddenly felt a hand on her shoulder. She whipped her head around to see Beast Boy behind her.
"Come back to me now, Raven." He spoke calmly to her. He was in human form, his face dirty and his hair disheveled. Scratches and wounds covered his chest and arms. He too was breathing heavily.
She levitated abruptly back a few feet away from him. Blinking rapidly, Beast Boy could see her eyes go from red to amethyst and back to red. The power struggle going on inside of Raven was almost visible to him.
"You can't lock me back up again," She cried out, voice angry and deep, Rage still having a strong hold over her mentally.
It won't be like that anymore. Raven said from inside her mind. She was slowly gaining control over Rage.
The control over her emotions was something Raven had for a while. She was in control.
"I'm in control now, Rage." Raven took over her emotion, sending her back into her mind. Opening her eyes, she could see clearly now, Rage was controlled safely in her mind.
Beast Boy stood back and watched while Raven gained control over herself. His body ached; he was bleeding and he was pretty sure one of his ribs was broken. He watched as Raven's shoulders sagged, and she dropped to her knees. As quickly as he could, he went to her side. Wrapping his left arm around her shoulders, he embraced her lopsided; his right side too painful to move.
"Rae, I've got you." He spoke into her hair as he kissed the top of her head. Raven's body pressed against his.
"I'm tired," She rasped.
"I know, me too," He pressed his cheek against her head. "You were amazing, you are amazing, Raven. What you just did…"
"I wasn't expecting much of a fight from you two, consider me impressed."
The two Titans looked back at General Immortus. He still had a large number of drones surrounding him, they were ready for battle. "But now you're through," The old man spoke with a devilish grin on his face. He threw his arm forward and the entirety of his army charged towards the two of them.
"I can't-" Raven started, looking up at the changeling.
"I don't think I can fly," He winced in pain, panicking as the drones got closer. He morphed into a horse with a groan. Motioning his head, Raven used the last of her strength to get onto his back.
They galloped a few yards when they heard an explosion behind them. The drones that were gaining on them just seconds prior were lying in a smoking heap from where they stood. Beast Boy morphed into his human form, grasping at his side. "I'm sorry, Rae, I can't- I think my rib is broken." He held onto his side.
"We've got to move," Raven took a steadying breath. "I can't see what's happening…"
Another explosion sounded. A gust of wind cleared the smoke, drones lay in heaps of mechanical limbs and sparking parts. And the familiar sound of a sonic canon blasted a huge section of Immortus' drones. Beast Boy smiled so wide his cheeks hurt. Raven might have cried tears of joy had she not been so exhausted.
"Boy am I fucking glad to see you two."
"I could say the same, Cy," Beast Boy smiled, never more relieved to see his friend and teammate.
"Hold on, I gotta finish this," Cyborg pivoted, aiming his amped up sonic canon at General Immortus and blasted him square in the chest, knocking the villain off his perch and skidding across the pavement. "Boo-yah, motherfucker."
A/N: So yeah, that happened. Honestly, i've said this the last few chapters I've posted- but I don't know if this will ever get finished. I was a weird kid in my younger years (12-15) and this was a place that made me feel a little less weird and a little more accepted. Even though it's 10 years later, it still brings a little happiness knowing that there are people who still enjoy my mediocre stories. All I can say is that I'll try to finish this- but I'm not making any promises.
Review (I'm still a review whore :P )
