I played the first two American releases for the GBA and like them a good deal, but I'm not sure if I'd enjoy the GC and Wii ones, because they're not portable. Any input?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not down on Super Mario Galaxy, but unless you've been living under a rock for the past 20 years, the storyline is VERY familiar; I won't waste my time trying to describe it. Fire Emblem may not win an award for originality, but the plot is more complex and offers more variety than any Mario game. Furthermore, I'll even contend that their ratings system is busted. Not all games can be rated in terms of storyline; I'm guessing that puzzlers like Tetris would automatically receive zeroes since they have no story to speak of. GT's score of this game can also be a little misleading; Electronic Gaming Monthly and Nintendo Power scored it in the 8.5-9.0 range.
Super mario galax didn't get the storypoints because it was a good story with many twists, it was bacause the story was like we wanted it.

I'll admit I didn't give this game enough chance, though I don't have that much time to, but the difficulty seemed a little unbalanced. I've been playing games all my life, including games LIKE (though not) Fire Emblem, so I figured I could handle Normal mode, but like they said, if you leave vulnerable people exposed they'll die in one hit, and in the beginning almost every character of yours dies in two hits, including counters to the blows you try and deal to the enemy, so you have to be perfect in movement timing and tactics or you'll get a game over. I actually enjoyed that difficulty except it was taking ages to get through the game, so I started over on easy, except it was rediculously easy, and thus no fun to me as I was liking the challenge, in comparison. Plus the levels were set up differently to make it even easier.
