You know, it wouldn't be very surprising if gaming is splitting into a variety of sub-mediums. As things grows, fragmentation often comes. Take basicly every religion on earth, for example, or the "fine" and "trash"-part of pretty much every other medium, and you'll see the pattern. That's all speculation, of course.
As for Nintendo getting all this attention, mass media loves to report about huge and rapid sucesses (and scandals). Which makes the reported success (or scandal) so much bigger.
