Paladino Clarifies His Remarks: I never said gays were dysfunctional; I only said their lives weren't as valid as heterosexual lives.

Carl Paladino, GOP-Tea Party candidate for governor of New York, gave a speech to religious fundamentalists yesterday, in which he expressed his opinions about the gay and lesbian community. Since then he and his staff have been trying to walk back clarify some of those in a rather inelegant and -- dare I say it -- dysfunctional manner.

I did not say this phrase, as was inaccurately attributed to me by some media outlets:

"There is nothing to be proud of in being a dysfunctional homosexual. That is not how God created us."

I do not agree with this passage, nor did I say it. Apparently a few reporters relied upon suggested remarks distributed by my hosts at the synagogue in Williamsburg after my departure, not the actual statement I made. My campaign staff has worked with the inaccurate outlets and most corrected their stories after viewing video of the event.

A look at a video clip of the event does indeed make it clear that he did not read that part of his prepared speech. However, what it shows him reading was this:

We must stop pandering to the pornographers and the perverts who seek to target our children and destroy their lives. I didn't march in the gay parade this year -- the gay pride parade this year. My opponent did, and that's not the example we should be showing our children, and certainly not in their schools. And don’t misquote me as wanting to hurt homosexual people in any way. That would be a dastardly lie. My approach is live and let live. I just think my children and your children would be much better off and much more successful getting married and raising a family, and I don’t want them brainwashed into thinking that homosexuality is an equally valid and successful option — it isn’t.

Based on this comment and his past actions, I take it that Paladino's philosophy might best be put this way:

Live, get married, raise a family, commit adultery, have a child out of wedlock, send emails depicting bestiality to friends and colleagues...but please, please, please let the pornographic, perverted, homosexuals live their invalid, unsuccessful lives -- as long as they do so away from our children and schools.

And of course he's not homophobic because, not only has he actually allowed one gay man to work on his campaign, he also claims he has a good relationship with a gay nephew. (I wonder if he has instructed his children that they are not to be fooled by any of this?)

Finally, as further evidence of Paladino's being anything but a heterosexist bigot, his campaign manager, Michael R. Caputo, offered the following observation:

Carl Paladino is simply expressing the views that he holds in his heart as a Catholic. Carl Paladino is not homophobic, and neither is the Catholic Church.

Enough said.

Apparently part of Paladino's excuse is the the speech was prepared by one of the leaders of the religious group he was addressing. To paraphrase what Mistermix wrote on the Balloon Juice blog this morning: I think New York voters need to ask themselves if they want a governor who reads as his own words whatever some right-wing religious leader shoves in front of his face, even if he edits it on the fly.

Not that I doubt the emails very much, considering his public character, but how can we check the accuracy of those? It looks like anybody could have thrown those up on a blog or website and claimed they came from him.

Just want to make sure we don't play up something that isn't accurate.

Thanks

Edit: I found corroborating evidence from some other journalistic sources. This is real, not just a smear campaign:

He has admitted to them. One of several links. Try this new thing called Google. Here "Let me Google that for You."

From one of the links:

However, there’s one particularly curious turn of phrase that best sums up the candidate’s anti-competence. Pressed by Colmes about forwarding racist and pornographic emails, some of which featured bestiality videos, Paladino exasperatedly declared, “I’m human.”

When asked whether he found the racist emails funny, Paladino wouldn’t say. “Whether there was humor or not,” he replied,”was irrelevant to me.”

In his own defense, Paladino raises his apology, which was weak even by today’s “I’m sorry you’re such a baby” standards:

To any of the ladies I’ve offended, I apologize. I say this to the men out there who have never opened a graphic image on the Internet: Don’t vote for me. For those who have, I welcome your vote.

Seems pretty @!$%#ing proud of it actually.

Some 59 percent say they had an unfavorable opinion of Paladino while 30 percent had a positive opinion, the survey found. Six in 10 see the Buffalo real estate mogul as a “loose cannon who doesn't have the temperament to be governor.”

The survey found Paladino trailing far behind Cuomo 32 to 56 percent among likely voters in the race to be New York's chief executive.

Cuomo crushing Paladino by huge margins. SurveyUSA has Cuomo leading by 23 points (57% to 34%), up from a nine-point margin (49% to 40%) just after the primary. Quinnipiac now puts Cuomo ahead by 18 (55% to 37%), having shown him leading by just six points (49% to 43%) three weeks ago.

WIth all due respect Carloz, I did not personally attack Bubba. I showed him a link. It is a site that is for lazy people.

With all due respect, RAC, the site is called "Here let me look that up for you," not "Google for really lazy people," which you must have changed it to in order to make a point. However, even if it that were the name it still would have been an obvious effort on your part to call Bubba "really lazy." Now that's certainly nowhere near some of the name calling I've seen on the Vine, which is why I thought it merited an equally not-too-harsh CoH reminder rather than anything stronger. You see, while it may just be "funnin'" to you, something like that can be taken personally and sometimes cause an angry reaction that leads to an angrier reaction that leads to...well, let's just say it's a slippery slope that I try to deal with by giving CoH reminders. The fact that Bubba did not react angrily is to his credit.

BTW - Bubba does live in a trailer.

I've known Bubba a while, and, so, yes I know that, which is why I didn't mention your unnecessarily asking him if the trailer park wasn't "getting the google" -- IOW, I knew you'd probably point out that he does live in one. I've yet to hear of any types of nighborhoods or dwellings that can get Internet, but somehow don't get Google.

Hey, why don't we all tell each other what kind of dwellings we live in, then we can make habits of mentioning them to each other when commenting? Oh, wait -- that would usually be irrelevant.

OK, what's the topic again? Oh, yeah, Paladino. Please continue... :-)

No you should have your dog taken away because clearly you aren't a responsible owner and didn't have it spayed. A fetus isn't human life, a human can live outside the body of another it is a potential human life. Hopefully very few. I cannot believe the level of sickness these candidates exhibit. The hypocrisy is so immense. Homophobic, yet I bet ol Carl would get excited watching male on male sex. Obviously, to him bestiality is a- ok, but homosexuality is not. I guess it would be proper then to teach our children at school to have sex with animals. The immoral sickness of this man and so many Republicans/Tea Party candidates is rather horrifying in many ways. I hope we take this chance in Nov to oust and keep out these people from our government and any influence they might have over our children in the future if we don't act now today.

Lovely, isn't he? We kept out kids away from religion entirely due to this kind of crap.

I expect him to punch somebody before this is over. The man cannot control his base instincts, of which he has many. He's a pig, and he's dangerous.

I would call the man a pit bull but I would hate to malign such a nice breed.

Has Paladino ever spoke out against pedaphiles in the Catholic Church.

If he's so against gays, wouldn't that be a good place to start?
He keeps telling us how much he loves Jesus, surely he has railed against this crime under his very nose?

Do any of you New Yorkers know if Paladino ever has fought to save alter boys from sodomy and Catholic predator preists - or is he just blowing smoke as usual?

fyi .. most pedophiles are straight .. yes even those who sexually abuse boys.for most pedophiles it isn't the gender of the child it's that it is a child. prepubescent. why more boys ? boys tend to be alone more with the priests than girls do. all a matter of what is available.

the gender of the child does not indicate the sexuality of the pedophile ... it is about power and control. the attraction to a child in general.

so please , don't equate gay men with pedophilia priests. that's an error.

I'm thinking that Cuomo has the clear win unless NY has gone completely off the deep end. That a boy, Paladino you @!$%#ing scumbag. Hide behind the Catholic church for validity to your racist, bigoted fascist ideology!

As if the Church hadn't enough problems with their own deviants than to get this horse's behind trying to be their poster boy!

Is the Church dropping anything in Paladino's collection basket?

Interesting question, PDeuth. If the institution itself were, is it legal? I think not! Individuals can do what they want. But if the institution is tax exempt, I believe that will not fly.

I don't know, let me see...

If my "lifestyle" (that of a homosexual) isn't "equally valid", then maybe my tax rate shouldn't be either. I mean, I'm not as equally valid as the rest of the NY'ers, I shouldn't be charged equally valid taxes.

Works for me.

I lovee how he apologises. "Oh well I never said that, I in actuality said something JUST as offensive, but not in those exact words!"

Oh, that's fine so. I'll just go and wear a hazmat suit out so I don't spread my gay to your kids. Because we all know it's a contagious disease like?

You know what's worst? He missed Pride, best party of the year! So while his opponent was out living it up and having a good time, he's just gone and shot himself in the foot!

Best piece of logic I've heard all week! Brightened my day up big time.

Uhboy, here it comes, the "I'm really not as big an @!$%# as it is apparent I am" Tour.

Teabaggers. They say completely idiotic psychoblabber, then begin the long, tortured road back to appear sane. It never works. Once an idiot, always an idiot.

Thanks Paladino for your deep thoughts--but they kind of clash with the whole "all men are created equal" thing, don't they? You don't think it's genetic, the gay thing, huh? Just a wild crazy decision that some crazy kids make? Thanks for not taking us out. Your restraint against genocide is commendable.

New Yorkers, be sure to stop by the table in the rear where Carl Paladino will validate your lives (or not).

If a person is serving or has served others in some capacity, their life has value and meaning. This guy is narrow minded and short sighted.

He's trying to backpedal, but the damage is done with the gay-and-gay-supporting communities.

Now how about Carl explain why he appeared at a speech where women were not only banned, but had water poured on them while they stood outside on the sidewalk. (I seeded a story on this if anyone is interested...or just google it up).

This is the United States; not the middle east. We don't ban women from taking part in journalism or political speeches/rallies, or pour water on them for "religious reasons".
