SAfm radio presenter John Perlman's on-air revelation that the SABC has blacklisted certain commentators who cannot be relied upon to sing the praises of the ANC government is sadly not surprising.
Inheritors of a media apparatus designed to legitimise the apartheid regime, the ANC apparatchiks who control the SABC have faithfully continued the practice of seeing themselves as the public relations arm of the state.
The irony is that the abuse of the SABC's public service mandate will as surely backfire on the ANC and its SABC hacks as it did on the apartheid system. As it becomes increasingly distrusted as an impartial voice, so its reputation reflects back upon the government.
