A Super Bowl commercial from Budweiser is wading into the immigration debate.
The one-minute ad, "Born the Hard Way," is a departure from the beer maker's more lighthearted commercials of years past, featuring puppies and the Clydesdales.
Released ahead of the big game, the ad depicts Anheuser-Busch co-founder Adolphus Busch coming to America from Germany in the 1850s.
"You're not wanted here! Go back home!" people shout at him as he arrives in the United States.
At the conclusion of the Hollywood-esque production, a graphic states: "When nothing stops your dream, this is the beer we drink."
The company said the ad was in the works since May and the timing has nothing to do with President Donald Trump's recent executive orders.
"There's really no correlation with anything else that's happening in the country," Budweiser VP Ricardo Marques told Ad Week.
Nonetheless, the ad has generated a lot of discussion on social media, earning criticism and praise.
I'm not to happy. Budweiser will be playing a pro-immigration ad during the Super Bowl. I'm a simple man and like my Bud. Time to switch.

I don't push alcohol and never liked Bud but I'll find a product of theirs to salute this spot saluting immigration https://t.co/JIepRLPl9A

Bud wastes no time monetizing immigration. "When nothing stops your dream, this is the beer we drink." Gag me, @Budweiser. https://t.co/xnTJqig7Hk
