Actor Mark Duplass sparked a big backlash by calling conservative commentator Ben Shapiro a “genuine person” with good intentions.

In a since-deleted tweet, Duplass encouraged his "fellow liberals" to follow Shapiro if they are interested in hearing an honest perspective from the other side of the political aisle.

After he was flooded with angry comments, Duplass deleted the tweet and replaced it with an apology, writing that he in no way endorses "hatred, racism, homophobia, xenophobia or any such form of intolerance."

In an exclusive interview on "The Story" on Thursday, Shapiro said it's "amazing" that in 24 hours he apparently went from a "genuine person" to someone who's associated with hatred and intolerance.

"Just as we've seen many, many times, this sort of mob mentality rules on Twitter," Shapiro said, adding there would have been similar fallout if Duplass had tweeted something complimentary about anyone who's even slightly right-wing.

Shapiro said he actually feels bad for Duplass, who he said is caught between a rock and a hard place because "folks in Hollywood are not particularly fond of people on the right."

"He made a decent statement and then everybody on the left came down on him, and he still wants to work in the town."
