President Donald Trump said during a rally for West Virginia U.S. Senate candidate Patrick Morrisey that New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo officially coined the Democrats' new slogan.

Cuomo (D) was ripping into Trump's "Make America Great Again" slogan during a speech in New York City, when he said that "[America] was never that great."

Trump called the remark "career-threatening" to Cuomo, a former U.S. HUD secretary under President Clinton who is running for his third term in Albany.

"How'd he get away with that one? He was speaking to a room loaded up with socialists," Trump said at the Charleston rally, imitating Cuomo's scratchy Queens accent.

"His comments are an insult to the generations of brave Americans whose blood and sweat and tears built our magnificent country," Trump said.

"That's going to be their theme now, America was never great... Let's give them a new theme, America was never great," he added.

Trump also said that the Democratic Party "wants to turn America into one big fat sanctuary city," and slammed the left for supporting illegal immigration.

"They're more protective of aliens than they are for the people," he said, going on to lament the death of Iowa student Mollie Tibbetts, whose alleged killer is an illegal immigrant.
