The Senate on Friday voted 51-49 to advance Kavanaugh's nomination to the final vote.

Three out of four key undecided senators -- Susan Collins (R-Maine), Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) -- voted "yes" to advance the nomination, while Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) voted "no."

The cloture vote, however, is not necessarily an indication of how the final vote will go.

With a 51-49 majority, Republicans can't afford more than one defection if all Democrats were to vote together. A Manchin vote for Kavanaugh, though, would give Republicans some cushion.
