A shelter in place has been put in to effect in northern Ironton, Ohio, Worthington, Kentucky and areas of Greenup County, Kentucky. This is caused by a chemical leak at the CSX rail yard in Raceland, Ky.
The chemical most likely leaked is Hydrochloric acid and many schools including Russell Independent Schools, Raceland-Worthington Schools, and Ironton City Schools. A day care has also been closed for the day.
4 people were contaminated in the leak and have been taken to Bellefonte Hospital in Ashland, Ky for decontamination. The CSX yard where the leak took place is also closed.
Reports say that a large cloud of the acid is moving along the area and some evacuations may take place.
The leak has been confirmed and the officials at CSX report that the leak started at about 11:30 last night when a train that was leaking the chemical was moving over the tracks to the rail yard. The amount of leaked chemical is not determined and teams are still working to determine the seriousness of the leak.
The people that were affected by the contamination are OK and all the places listed before as being closed and ordered to shelter in place are to continue. Police have also closed US 23 which is a highway that crossing through the area and connects the affected areas.
Reports show that the rain moving across the area is helping to dilute the chemical in the air, while the wind carries it further downwind.
Everyone is the surrounding area that was in a shelter in lace has now been given th OK and we now know that most of mess has been taken care of. The only exceptions are the immediate area near the leak and cloud.
Scary stuff. They closed down my school for the day and I'm stuck in the house because if the shelter in place. As I type, the siren near the courthouse is sounding identifying the shelter in place thats in effect.
Hopefully this doesn't get much worse.
A breaking news segment just came on the news announcing that evacuations will take place, but I don't believe they will occur where I live.
Brandon, does a shelter in place mean you stay where you are? Sounds scary. Good luck!
Yes that's what it means. I think I'm fine right where I'm at, but it's a precautionary measure.
Thanks!
Good work, Brandon. Keep us informed, and please stay safe!
Thanks. I just updated and managed to get a hold of more information. The good thing is that is moving away from my area, but closer to a higher populated area where my school is located.
We have the all clear now, and thank God that siren finally stopped. That gets very very annoying.
Wow. I totally missed this. My grandmother lives in the northern part of Ironton.
