Until 2007, that was considered the modern-day peak for the Canadian dollar. The loonie did rise as high as $2.78 US in 1864 during the U.S. Civil War. But the Canadian dollar was pegged to gold, while the U.S. had abandoned the gold standard as Union finances deteriorated. So most contemporary dollar-watchers related the dollar's high and low points to post-1950 markets, when comparisons between the two currencies are more relevant.
