Making Charitable Donations

Making a charitable donation of stock is easy with Scottrade. Simply complete a Charitable Gift Letter of Authorization (LOA) form and bring it to your local branch office. You can find the Charitable Gift LOA form in the Forms Center under Individual Forms.

Some tips to remember when completing the Charitable Gift LOA form:

  • Make sure all information on the form is complete and accurate, particularly the information for the receiving firm.
  • Include the name and phone number of a contact person at the charitable organization, if possible.
  • Make sure you designate an exact number of shares that you would like to donate, not a dollar value.

If you are making a donation from a retirement account, you will need to complete a Distribution Form in addition to the Charitable Gift LOA. Use the Traditional IRA Distribution Form or the Roth IRA Distribution Form, depending on the type of retirement account you hold.

Generally, charitable gift donations are processed in 24 hours, but because of high volume during the month of December, you may experience longer processing times. Scottrade guarantees year-end delivery of charitable donations that will be available for inclusion in your 2009 taxes if you submit your forms by Friday, Dec. 18, 2009. Requests submitted after that date will be processed as quickly as possible to help you make your donation before year-end.
