In The Know Scottrade, Taxes & You

Tax time is fast approaching and can be a stressful time of year. However, Scottrade is here to help make filing your taxes as easy as possible. By providing you with tools such as GainsKeeper, Scottrade helps you minimize the impact of taxes on your investments. Keep in mind that Scottrade does not provide tax advice. So if you have any specific tax-related questions, please consult your tax professional.

Finding Your Tax Documents

Scottrade will provide a 1099 or 5498 if your account requires that one is generated. A 1099 will be generated if your account has reportable transactions such as a dividend, interest or sell transaction. Your 1099 will be mailed no later than January 31st.

Form 5498 is generated for retirement accounts to report any contributions made during the previous tax year. 5498s will be mailed no later than May 31st. This form cannot be generated any sooner because prior year contributions to retirement accounts can be made up to the April tax filing deadline.

To access your tax documents, click on the Research button at the top of the ScottradeELITE window. Next, click Scottrade.com Account Access. A new window will pop up. In this window click the My Account tab and then click Account History on the left menu. Next click Tax Statements. From this page you will be able to select the tax statement you would like to view.

Cost Basis

GainsKeeper automatically keeps track of your cost basis information. In addition to calculating your capital gains and losses, GainsKeeper tracks commissions, wash-sales, breakout lots and more.

To access GainsKeeper, click the Research button at the top of your ScottradeELITE window. Next, click Scottrade.com Account Access. A new window will pop up. In this window, click the My Account tab and then click GainsKeeper on the left menu. If you have any questions, please e-mail gainskeeper@scottrade.com.
