2006 World Series Champs......THE CUBS!

I know, I know...most of you are shaking your heads thinking, The Cubs? Well, yea the Cubs. I'll tell you why I believe they have a pretty decent shot of not only going to the postseason, but even making it to the final game, and winning it all. To begin, let us talk about the National League, well, actually, there isn't much to say except for maybe the Cardinals. Let's face it, The National League is pretty weak. The Cardinals, and in my opinion The Cubs, are the only 2 teams with a shot for the NL title. Let me tell you why I think the Cubs are going to do well. The Cubs can swing the bat, and might I add, pretty damn good. The Cubs finally have a natural lead-off hitter at the beginning of the order in Juan Pierre, the Cubs first since Kenny Lofton, and they only had him for a short time. Batting Second, they have Todd Walker, and playoff veteran and a guy who is a great hitter. Then they have D Lee & Aramis, 'nuff said. batting 5th, they have newcomer Jacque Jones, and he is a solid outfielder who doesn't need to be amazing for this team, but to be halfway decent, and we'll be happy. 6th they have Michael Barret, who currently is one of the better catchers in the Majors offensively and defensively. 7th they have Matt Murton who is an amazing hitter, and as of late, has shown that he can play some great defense as well. 8th they have Ronny Cedeno, and I'm not gonna lie, he's there for a his defense, not offense. Last we have the 9th spot, which surprising for the Cubs, is not a bad thing. Both Prior and Zambrano are pretty decent hitters, but the rest are pretty bad. Oh well...its a pitcher, what do you expect. The downfall for the Cubs will be their pitching, but I believe that the bullpen is full of veterans who can hold the team together. Who cares if the team gives up 4, 5, 6 runs...when they can produce 10 at any given day. Zambrano and Maddux will be solid for the Cubs, that's 2/5...but the rest will be shaky, that is until Prior comes back, then we'll have 3/5. Rusch can go with a .500 win percentage, and that will be fine...and the 5th spot will be on a platoon basis for some youngsters. ANYWAY, what I'm trying to say is that every team that Dusty has ever been successful with, he has had a good lead-off hitter (Juan Pierre), and solid bullpen (Scott Eyre, Bob Howry, Scott Williamson), and a good closer (Ryan Dempster). All the pieces are in place for a world series run, and maybe later down the line, The Cubs will make a late trade to help the team out. GO CUBS!

Ummmm, I got to say that the formula you described for winning, "Who cares if the team gives up 4, 5, 6 runs...when they can produce 10 at any given day" is a proven formula for failure, just look at the past champions since 1994. The common theme is not their ability to score runs but their ability to prevent giving up runs. Allowing 4, 5 or 6 runs is not how to win in post season baseball, allowing 1 and scoring 2 is how you win championships.

As is evidenced by my beloved White Sox. Any comments directed at me regarding the Sox have to be limited to last year. Or at least until they start to get hot this year.

I'm afraid you've forgotten one central obstacle to your Cubs winning fantasy...
