Carrie Underwood performed a duet with guest mentor Randy Travis tonight.
To round out the full hour American Idol needs to give us the one name of the person being eliminated this week, we were treated to performances by three Grand Ole Opry members - Brad Paisley and a duet by Idol's own Carrie Underwood and guest mentor Randy Travis. But the performances would be overshadowed by the shocking news of who was to go home.
It wasn't long before we learned that Allison Iraheta, Michael Sarver and Alexis Grace were in the bottom three. In short order, Ryan let Allison know that she was safe, leaving Michael and Alexis to sweat it out until the end.
And it probably didn't help their nerves to know that the judges said they were willing to consider using the Judges Save for one of them - that someone turned out to be Alexis.
When Michael was declared safe, the judges told Alexis that her encore performance would determine the judges' vote for her safety. Unfortunately, as Simon said, her performance was good, but not good enough.
Does this exit disprove the alleged rumors that Idol producers have already determined the Top 4? Alexis' name was leaked to be among the final four.
I don't know about the producers, but these results definitely through a wrench in who I thought would be in the final four.
The rest of the show was your typical filler.
After learning that 31 million votes were cast, being reminded of the new Judges Save rule and seeing a review of Tuesday night's performance, we finally got to hear from our Top 11.
Unfortunately, after the group performance of Travis Tritt's "T-R-O-U-B-L-E," I kind of wished they had kept quiet. Normally, I'm one of the minority that actually like the group numbers - that is until tonight. It sounded horrible like 11 different people were singing separately instead of together in harmony.
And my mood didn't improve when I saw this week's Ford video. "Here It Goes Again" featured a water balloon fight between the Top 11. Normally, these videos are one of my favorite fluff pieces, but I'm just not feeling it this season.
Luckily the guest performers were at least entertaining. Brad Paisley debuted his new single "Then." And then recently inducted Grand Ole Opry member Carrie Underwood teamed up with the man who issued her invitation to The Opry, Randy Travis, for their first live duet of "I Told You So."
Finally, the identity of the Top 10 - Kris Allen, Anoop Desai, Matt Giraurd, Danny Gokey, Allison Iraheta, Megan Joy Corkrey, Adam Lambert, Scott MacIntyre, Lil Rounds, and Michael Sarver - have been identified for those of you waiting to purchase your Idol on Tour tickets.

Thanks! I can watch something else now!!! I did not think Alexis should go home YET but I did not think she would win.
We had to do a thing at the kid's school tonight, and I got home just in time to catch Alexis being sent home and missed all the fluff.
Her 'sing for her supper' performance only confirmed she didn't deserve to progress in the contest.
As I said yesterday, she started out strong, but faded out the last two weeks.
I was shocked to see Alexis leave. She has been a favorite of mine from the start. She is quite a little spitfire and I think her best was yet to come. I was looking forward to hearing her rendition of songs from different genres. I hope a record executive sees her potential and gives her a recording contract so america can continue to enjoy her voice. I will miss her beautiful smile and saucy attitude and wish her the best of luck in the future.
I don't know if she is going to get that chance, the music industry is saturated with fluff. I am sorry to see her go too, I hope she does not give up and tries to get her foot in the door another way... modeling or acting.... I think she has it in her to be an actress.
Alexis is one of the more talented finalists and deserved to stay. She has great stage presence, and a nice personality to go along with her talent and humility. I am sad to see her go . . . definitely feel she should have been among the final five . . . I think it may have hurt that she was one of two finalists from the same city (Memphis) . . . and the other (Li'l Rounds) was likely helped a little for being the only black finalist remaining. With only three females remaining and seven males, the choreographers will have their work cut out for them on tour. We love you Alexis!
I don't agree. I think Alexis has an amazing voice coming out of that tiny body! I'm sorry to see her go. There are weaker performers that should have gone before her. I don't think she would have won...but deserved to be in the top 10.
Alexis was not a strong contestant... lots of pop appeal but not nearly as strong a vocalists as some of the others. It was the right choice and she'll be just fine.
Not a huge fan of the show nor this week's genre, however, LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the duet of Randy Travis and Carrie Underwood. Now that girl's got talent.
I laughed at the flower thingy when I saw it.
I had a discussion with a young woman about the new trend of wearing a hat-sized flower. Apparently, its all the rage. According to my source (a 19 yr old fashionista) the flower should be "oversized, add whimsy, and draw attention to itself." She was so intense, you'd have thought we were discussing the Bush Doctrine.
After seeing Carrie Underwood's flower, I'd say mission accomplished.
I have to say - I never was as into Alexis as the judges seem to be. I am surprised she went, but not disappointed, as it allows some of my favourite underdogs like Anoop, Megan and Allison to last further into the show.
Insane that Alexis went over Michael. Is he your fav because he's likeable, cause it can't be because he's a great singer or performer - he's just not.
I was stunned. My pick to pack it in would have been Michael Sarver - or on any other night when she's not sick, Meghan. I think the flu saved her this week.
Sorry to see you go, Alexis, but you'll do fine!
I was really nervous to see Adam at the end of the line. I kind thought HE might be a goner. Am I the ONLY one who absolutely LOVED his performance of Ring of Fire?? Okay, so the Elvis sneer should probably stop, and the little shirt-flipping thingy, well...but what a voice!!!!
I think he could have credited where he got the arrangement from ...
Dilanas version much better.
Alexis is much more talented than Megan and I know if I was going to see the AI tour I would prefer to hear Alexis than Megan. Adam annoys me. Favorites right now are Kris and Matt Giraud.
I am still holding out for a better performance from Danny, but I really am looking forward to seeing what Kris and Matt do also.
I would rather have seen Micheal or Scott go, but I had a feeling it was going to be Alexis. There was too much pushing of her to be sexy and that just is not what performing is all about. She has weaknesses. On the small stage she was fine. She gets lost on the big stage. There is also an insecurity in her performance.
That being said, I am sad to see her go, because if given better advice, she would probably follow it.
Most of the others are just so much better in quality. The men did better as a whole in picking songs and arranging them better. Most of them did not play it safe. I thought Micheal played it way too safe and failed in the delivery. He also would not take good advice. That is why I thought he should go.
I still like Allison, and that is a shock for me, because usually the young ones (16 to 20) annoy me... she has some talent there. She also uses the stage more than Alexis did.
I was tempted to quit, but I will stick around.
I think Micahel was bottom two beacuse he was first to perform. I agree Alexis wouldn't have won the whole thing, but she should have been Top 10. She's a very good singer, and I thought she had the fan base. This is a tough season, as all the singers really are good, and I think they have to bring it perfect every week (perfect singing, correct song choice). I love Danny, and also have soft spots for Lil, Alexis, Michael and Megan as they are doing this to give their families a better life. Anyone doing this for their kids is endearing to me. At least three of the four are on the tour. I sure hope this opens some doors for Alexis because I think she could go far. Bad song choice killed her chances I think. I also feel the "sing for your supper" should be contestant's choice and not sing the song that got them in the bottom in the first place. Do you think if it was Adam on the chopping block Simon would have saved him with the Ring of Fire performance?
I think the 'sing for your supper' is an excellent test of character and professionalism.
If these kids want to go out into the world of entertainment it isn't going to be easy.
What is too bad about the "sing for your supper" part (what a title... LOL)
is that she had to sing the same song. When you don't know you are the bottom, how do you prepare to change... and you can not change your song choice.
I guess that should be warning to all .... prepare for a drama change or something.
think about it, if they were out touring to support their album and had booked a show, sold tickets and had a full house eagerly awaiting them to take the stage, they can't suddenly decide to not sing because someone hurt their feelings.
This isn't a game, the entertainment industry is brutal and unforgiving.
Maybe all singers have to have a "sing for your supper song" they can call on when and if their number is up. Then it can be a song that showcases (or at least it should) their talent and why they are on Idol in the first place. It doesn't even have to be a song they sang before. It should not be the song that got them the lowest number of votes, although I do agree they have to be roughed and toughed for anything in the entertainment world.
I really like that idea.
Oh, and Vacelts, I unfortunately did not see the story about Michael's daughter, but it's probably best I didn't...I'd had a bad night and probably would have bawled:-) I just got to catch from Carrie & Randy's duet unti the end. And wow, I knew Carrie could sing and I've seen her in concert, but that song was incredible. Was Randy even really needed? A couple of verses and that's all he really did.
Thank you, Omega. Any Idol execs reading today??? :-)
Vacelts -- it would probably be too late for this year, but next season, maybe they have the top 12 work on a "sing for your supper song," before they perform the first time as the Top 12. They could drop the cheesy group sings. I really hate those. Drop 'em until you get to the top 10. Let those two weeks be for the theme, video and supper song.
Just wanted to let Lady Regina know that I loved Adam's performance, too! Can't get it out of my head - it was creepy the first time around and the beginning was rough, but I watched it a few more times and love it!
I like Adam's song more for the "eff you" it gave to the whole concept of theme nights. Why on earth do they do these stupid theme nights when nobody on that stage will ever sing disco, Neil Diamond tunes, Barry Manilow songs, etc.? And most of them already know if they will be country, pop, rock, etc. The judges spend half their time telling people they need to show us "who they are", and then they force them to pretend they can or will sing country or showtunes or Neil Sedaka crap. I hate these stupid theme nights. At least Adam is honest --- he knows he isn't interested in the Grand Ole Opray and he knows they shur as hayell aint innerested in that thar boy with the nail polish.
AMEN!!!!!
I hate these theme nights. They confine the artist and then criticise those who break the mold.... Mind you I am not a fan of Adam, but as with the other men, he took the most chances, and it payed off. I think that is what made David Cook stand out last year.
get ready for some more hate then, they are covering 'the 50 Years of Motown' next week...
Oh brother. So this is how Motown night will go. Lil Rounds will sing a Motown song, and get blasted for remaining "in her comfort zone" or not "stepping out of her box". (She was blasted for doing country, though, b/c she DID step out of her box, when she was TOLD to do country).
Some of the others will get blasted for not staying "true to themselves" by doing R&B. You can't win on this show. If you "stay in your comfort zone" by doing your preferred genre, you aren't "taking chances". But if you stray from the little box they've put you in, you get blasted for that, too.
Had Adam done his song country-style, they would have reamed him anyway. He's better off doing what he did.
You could work with some of those tunes. Hopefully they just don't pick a song they really like to hear.... that seems to be the biggest blunder.
I agree bigger, what riled me up was after Lil performed, they told her that she needed to show her R&B side and 'make it hers.' Then when Adam does EXACTLY that next, Simon crapped all over him. I was surprised to see who left, I expected Flu girl to get the boot, heck I expected it last week after the Rockin' Robin debacle. I am a Danny fan. Carrie Underwood showed everyone what singing is last night and I'm sorry but does anyone think any contestant could sing, hit, and stay on key the way Carrie did last night? That one song turned me into a Carrie Underwood fan.

Yeah... the judges are annoying me. They just told Alexis to be sexy... what the hell is that????
LOL, see my comment at 13.5. You are so true. You cannot win with these judges.
Oh I agree, if Adam tried doing country... he would have sold out. The men took chances by singing womens songs (accept Adam, Michael, and Anoop)... This gave them the chance to change it up and make it their own.
Lil Rounds and Alexis stayed safe and it stuck out like a sore thumb, Micheal's did too.
Meagan switched it up by changing the tempo of the tune and made it her style.
Alexis was fine. She would not have won. I believe we will see her again someday. Adam is the one who needs to go. He is tooooo overdone, and honestly, his appearance sidetracks viewers from the fact that he really doesn't sing as well as everyone one thinks. He is a good screamer though!
I'm glad the judges saved their "SAVE". I believe they will need it down the road for Matt or Anuup, as this popularity contest continues. For now, there are plenty of mediocre singers to eliminate. Historically, the mediocre singers who win tend to not go anywhere because they are very forgetable.
On a Carrie Underwood note; every time she performs on Idol, she should hand Simon an autographed picture of her receiving her latest award. He would never live that one down!
vacelts,
Simon has always hated country and western songs but in all honesty, Paula gave Carrie Underwood a harder time than Simon did back then. I remember Paula always forcing a positive critique toward Carrie. Simon just hated the fact that a country and western singer won the competition.
I love the fact that Carrie Underwood always maintains a level of class and talent that Paula can only dream about.
Adam is too effeminate for me and I can't get past his appearance. It seems too passe. I've yet to vote for a candidate on this year's American Idol. No one grabs me yet.
I may be mis-remembering her run on the show, but I think more than once Simon told her she was going to win the whole thing. And she mixed country and pop pretty effectively.
That being said, I couldn't stand her then and still don't like her now. She only one becuase she was cute and the 'safe' contestant.
Carrie is smart more than talented... She went to country pop. And she was able to get some good writers. On top of that she has the whole country conduct down. "Don't speak unless spoken to" "Don't rock the boat" "humility" etc. You know, she is sweet. You can not help but like her. Except my brother can not stand the song "Before he cheats" because it promotes beating up on the truck to get even. LOL =}
I was more for Bo Bice. That poor guy has had a rough road since the show.. being sick and a new dad.
His second album is better than his first.
Really sorry to see Alexis gone, one of my favorites. And no one has mentioned this, but I wonder how Michael feels now, effectively being told he wouldn't have been saved? Last, regarding the group performances: As I noticed a couple of weeks back, they seem to be pre-recorded lip syncs now. Last night was blatantly obvious!
I did not get to see Tuesday's show, I received many calls from friends who were not able to see it either. I'm not sure how large an area was out, but it is a Kansas City station and I'm from Topeka. So the two of the largest cities in Kansas and all of the small towns in between were unable to see the show, and in turn unable to vote. Not sure what kind of impact it would have had in the overall scheme of things, but it is still frustrating.
I'm disappointed that Alexis was the one sent home (not sure how she did, obviously), but on the basis of her prior performances she at least deserved to be in the top 10. After the articles that I read on Wednesday, I assumed that it would either be Michael or Scott that went home last night. I LOVE Allison, and am hoping that she sticks around for a while longer. And I'm definitely getting tired of Adam, I got to see a clip of Tuesday's performance, and I think he did a horrible job with that song. Used to like him, but he went a little far this time! I also used to like Danny, but he does pretty much the same thing every week.
My favorites right now are Allison and Matt!
I agree with Michael or Scott going home and I believe Alexis deserved a top 10 spot. My favorite that is left is Allison.
Jess,
Sorry you did not see it. I thought Michael sucked quite frankly. Alexis did not do as well as she had in the past. I think the big stage swallows her up.
What happened with Kansas was the same thing that happened with Chicago, when Jennifer Hudson was the bottom vote. They had a power outage due to a snow storm.
Thems is the breaks unfortunately... maybe the same thing will happen for Alexis... I don't think she is nearly as talanted, but she has strong potential.
vacelts, Simon said she wouldn't win because she was too young. Throughout the season he kept reinforcing that no one would vote for the country aspect. It's never been a secret that Simon doesn't like country...he liked her, he just didn't think she could win the competition from the beginning.
I definitely don't think Alexis deserved to go, and yet when I compare her version of Jolene to Brook White's version from last season, Brooke White blows her out of the water.
That said, I kinda think this was all planned, just to show that this wasn't all planned by kicking out one of the supposed favorites, and then refusing to save her, just to show that they weren't planning everything.
This season is starting to worry me though just because there's so many freaking boring guys left. Really, can anyone tell me the difference between Danny, Matt G, Anoop and Kris this week besides Anoop's ethnicity and Danny's sob story? And then Michael Sarver is just plain boring and not even all that good, while Scott has been pretty damn terrible the past few weeks as well, but he'll make it into the top 6 just because he's blind. I'm actually starting to think that Sarver may just be this year's Kristy Lee Cook, the contestant who continually gets voted into the bottom three, but never off the show because they are blond and cute. Alexis was at least different, plus she was pretty damn good. Definitely a mistake there.
Sounds like you need some WEHATEIDOL.com --- hysterical, honest, and mean recaps for each episode. The comments are priceless.
Adam and Danny will be the top two.
Oh yeah, and Carries' hair and black thing was hideous.
My 6 year old thought it looked like a bird's nest. I was waiting for Simon's comments. I can just imagine!
I was so sad to see Alexis go----if she could have nailed the do-over performance they just might have saved her but she didn't. Nevertheless, America got this one way wrong. She was in my top 4 also but America never likes who I like. Oh, well.
I think it was too early... and they are saving it for another person.
I am sure that was a factor... which was why it was no doubt put out there.
I am sooooo sick of the compliments paid to Scott. He is getting sympathy votes and he took the place of someone deserving top 10. His voice is weak and he hasn't impressed me yet. On the other hand, Adam and Danny are the top 2 vocalists w/Matt and Kris right behind them. I can easily see this being all guys in the top 5 and well deserved.
All I have to say is...ANOOP!!!!!!
Oh, and I predicted that though Allison is my strongest girl, she might find herself in the bottom...
I was SHOCKED to see her in the bottom after her GREAT performance.
And Adam still needs to go...hopefully he manages to butcher a Motown classic and gets booted for it.
