Invisible Children of Uganda – Have you Heard of them?

This seed is linked to a short documentary. It is not easy to watch, but critically important.

Until last week, I had never known of this. How is it possible? A 20-year war with a madman the leader of the "Lord's Resistance Army?" Terrorizing 5 African countries? Abducting thousands of children to act as his soldiers? The Invisible Children. 3,000 of them still held hostage and forced to commit atrocities.

I did not know of this until April 25th, when thousands around the world, mostly young people, "abducted" themselves in solidarity and a heroic attempt to bring high-profile visibility to the movement.

There is nothing I can write to inform the reader one iota as thoroughly as the documentary. It is not an easy piece to watch.

Had it not been for my own child, I would never have known about these children. That seems simultaneously fitting, yet humiliating that it took children to try to come to the rescue of children.

I feel every sentient being on this planet must be made aware of this and determine a way to help. As of yesterday, April 30, Oprah came on deck. I imagine now we'll start to hear about the children who have been tortured and have died while their mothers wept in despair.

How has a world that learned such a heinous lesson at the hands of Hitler allowed this to happen again? The atrocities are just as evil from a man of pure evil. It's not Uganda's problem. It's all of ours.

During the 6 days of their self-abduction, the Chicago movement tried to reached Oprah.

This is what is happening right now, today, May 1…

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Not my usual. There is nothing funny about this. I promised my son I would do everything in my power to help. This is, at least, a start.

Until last week, I had never known of this. How is it possible?

After bing on Newsvine a while, I realized-- there a lot of seeds and articles about various atrocities world-wide-- many eleicit long and heated discussions. However, there seems to be a significant lack of interest when the victims are black.

Why?

unfortunately, most of what gets seeded on the vine are from western news sources that ignore most of the stories like this for those they can more easily sensationalize or politicise.

this is but one of the many weaknesses in western society

Thank you for your responses. Thanks so much for clipping this, Krishna!! And I agree, D.

Something at the end of the documentary struck me - "There are no resources here - no oil..." It was something to that effect. So is it an issue of black? I think it's more an issue of "what's in it for me?" Or "not my problem." For Uganda, the growing power of Joseph Kony's Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) is going to MAKE this our problem, if we do not become proactive soon.

As I become older and jaded, I am so grateful for the fervor of youth. I was that 17-year-old once - working as hard as I could to make sure the children of America were not forced to go, against their will, to Asia, to die, with their mothers left crying and desperate.

we began fighting this situation in the eighties. no media at that point would become involved because of the politics surrounding it. at that time there were seven "warlords" like Kony in Africa and an estimated twenty plus across Asia. The motivations vary from area to area ranging from chocolate to conflict diamonds to the hunting (poaching) and smuggling of animals.

One aspect that was overlooked (and is easily overlooked without the appropriate contacts) is that there are major corporations indirectly involved in the conflicts that precipitate this environment.

"There are no resources here - no oil...

That may be part of the explanation.

But, I've often heard people in Internet discussions say that the reason so few Americans express concern about the genocide in Darfur is "because the Sudan doesn't have oil". Except, of course, the fact is that they do....

And as far as a lack of coverage in the Western media? I would agree that's a factor. But consider this-- the fact is, there have been numerous articles on NV about Uganda, the Congo, Darfur-- its not that they aren't there. What I've noticed is that they elicit few if any votes and/or comments.Nothing compared to those where the victims are "white". (Perhaps this seems like an overly harsh accusation on my part-- but its based on observations over a period of time...).

Perhaps one thing those of us who are concerned can do is to see that the word gets out. Help bring these articles to peoples' attention by voting for those that warrant it-- and by commenting.

Another thing that might be useful-- joining any or all of the following groups that are of interest-- and when you find articles that are appropriate, seed them to NV-- and then clip to these and/or other groups:

Black Folks

The Darfur Activism Group

And of course there are several others that would be appropriate.

So far there is no group specifically focused on Uganda--- it would be great if someone would start one. (I had intended to in the past but right now I have tooo many other committments).

#2.5: "...there have been numerous articles on NV about Uganda, the Congo, Darfur-- its not that they aren't there. What I've noticed is that they elicit few if any votes and/or comments."

I know I don't have all the answers; I may not have any answers... it does seem that when the victims belong to any minority, people tend to ignore the problems. What makes matters worse is that there are an awful lot of poignantly worthy causes out there and people are struggling just to make ends meet here... of course, there are plenty out there with wealth who could help, if they gave a damn, which they don't because they have caused the problems we have right here...

So, we go along being frustrated...

I don't have any answers, except to make people aware, so that those who CAN help will understand how to help. Excellent article, VW.

Sometimes that's true, sometimes not.

I have personally known several millionaires, and have also worked in so-called "ghettoes". I have seen many "poor people" who were greedy and materialistic-- and many wealthy people who are generous and care very little about materialism.

i believe the wealthiest man in the world is Bill Gates. When you get a chance, googole it and see what he does with his money.

I don't have any answers, except to make people aware,

Some time ago I appliedd to join AfricaVine, but haven't heard from them (sometimes someone sets up a group, and then becomes inactive on Newsvine. When the group moderator is inactive, applications for membership aren't processed). So, I have set up another group for anything related to Africa- its:

Africa on the Vine. (Its for anything about the continent-- Action for Africa! has a much narrower focus. It's only for discussions and articles about what actions to take to help improve situations there-- "Africa on the Vine" is for those articles, but also other articles as well-- culture, in-depth background and analysis, economics-- even ancient history).

At first I was thinking there might be too much duplication-- but its also possible that more groups mean that more newsviners will bump into one of them!

All are welcome :)

thank you for posting this one, VW. this is an issue that we (Advocacy Ink) have been fighting for over two decades with little success. this for of child slavery is easily as insidious and destructive as the child sex industry. Many countries are involved in the practice of conscription of children though it is most common in Africa and Asia

again, thank you for having the strength to post this

Thank you so much, Doug. I'm certain that it is an issue with widespread support and the knowledge of its existence. But until my teen went with 4,000 people to Santa Monica, CA, I was in the dark.

I anticipate being hit by the poop-slingers big time on this one, so I may need to beg for assistance with keeping that strength alive. I feel pretty sturdy on this one. I hope this string goes far and wide.

Anyone - please clip this or foward it to anybody, any place. As you can see, as of this day, as of this minute, powerful work is being done.

Great to see this being done!

At least on NV, in addition to "poop-slingers" (they do exist), a significant obstacle will probably be efforts by some to derail conversation threads in any way possible-- for example, changing the subject is popular. (Another common tactic-- instead of denying the situation, agreeing that it exists, but then minimizing the enormity of it).

Victoria,

A job well done. This is an awful event in human history, and no one cares. Our media doesn't cover much of anything (my uncle from England laughs at what we call news). But I must agree with Krishna. I have seeded and post to a few articles about African issues here at NV and hardly anyone comes. It is gross, that we Americans care so little about human rights issues, unless it serves our purposes.

Thank you again for posting this. We can go on and have a giggle at some later date. This was more important!

Since this involves 5 countries and 3000 abducted children still at large, I intend to mention it to as many people as I possibly can. It's way beyond tribal and way beyond race. Where suffering and grief are concerned, there is only humanity.

Ray - this is not a matter of racism, this is a matter of conscription of young boys (as young as 7 and 8) into military service. this is not racial or tribal based, this is forced recruitment or death for their families. this is going on in Africa, Asia and South and Central America. Perhaps you should witness it first hand as I have.

Glad those kids that made the film are ok. I watched and was appalled by what is still going on in Africa. Did anyone think to send them a copy of this film?

I agree! My heart was in my throat when that UN chopper touched down in the jungle.

Not only are the young men okay, they are doing a phenomenal amount of good, right this minute! One of them was at my son's "rescue" when 4,000 people walked single-file through Santa Monica, CA.

I believe awareness is now growing considerably. It will not be easy to get rid of Joseph Kony. However, once he is gone, I don't get the feeling anyone else wants to usurp power. I think they just want it to stop, but are terrified.

One man - ONE MAN!!!!! I never ceases to amaze me what one individual, armed with terror, can do to thousands. Astonishing! Did you see that he was number one on the list of people wanted for war crimes?

As do most people on Newsvine.

I agree with what some people have mentioned--- perhaps the best way to work for change is publicity. To make these facts known. (Seeding articles here, clipping them to groups, posting comments on the articles, voting for those that you feel deserve it--- all make them more noticeable).

Guyana - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Guyana (pronounced /ɡaɪˈænə/ or /ɡiːˈɑːnə/), officially the Co-operative Republic of Guyana and previously known as British Guiana, is the only state of the Commonwealth of Nations on mainland South America. On the northern coast of the continent, it is bordered to the east by Suriname, to the south and southwest by Brazil, to the west by Venezuela, and on the north by the Atlantic Ocean.

The wooden paddle on principal David Nixon's desk is two feet long, with a handle wrapped in duct tape that has been worn down by age and use. He found it in a dusty cabinet in his predecessor's office at John C. Calhoun Elementary in Calhoun Hills, S.C., where Nixon has been the principal since 2006. He has no idea if the old principal ever used it, but now it sits in plain view for all visitors to see, including children who have been dismissed to his office

Very emotional right now. Do you recall the method used to intimidate those young men who were made an example of? This principle is wrong wrong wrong!

this situation will continue until the underlying causes there are addressed. they have a struggling functional government that no other country is supporting due to pressure from multi-national companies profiting in the area. if this government was supported, the situation could be brought to an end

Doug, you are so much more aware than I am (probably most of us) regarding the politics in this matter - it seemed in the documentary that there was some fairly tangible existing government, eager to strike a peace accord.

The IC group is supporting cottage industries, but probably nominal at best as far as establishing an economic base.

I'd love a brief education regarding the multi-national companies and what they are profiting from. Didn't look like Uganda had a lot to offer, at least in resources. When you have time, I would be interested.

to begin with, when the former government collapsed it was replaced by a democratic government friendly to the US. no country, including the US has been willing to recognise this new government or offer support or aid in stabilizing trhe region. this is due in part (IMO) to pressure from companies such as Nestles, Nike, IG Farben and DuPont De Beurs ranging in everything from chocolate and coffee to mineral to diamonds. as long as the region stays destablized, it's business as usual (it's not just Uganda, it all of Africa)

The democratic government friendly to the US.

...is what it seemed like in the documentary. What is the benefit in keeping the region destabilized? I'm clearly naive about this stuff. I should think there would be a keen interest in rebuilding tourist business, etc., since no one will go there at present and the Continent is so rich in things other than oil.

Mexico will be next, feels like.

most of the business operations there are illegal under iternational law, not the least of which is the dealing in conflict diamonds. many of these companies use child labor and slave labor. all of this would come to an end if the area stabilized

Mexico is very possibly next. I saw this same type of situation in Central America in the late '70's and early '80's

I have seen a lot about how backward the cultures are, JB, this certainly being a prime example. I know guerilla militia are insanely cruel to their "own." I know a prevalent thought is that if the militia kills or starves its victims, eventually there will be very few left to keep under their thumb.

The Invisible Children movement, I think, is more concerned about this particular circumstance and group of kids, knowing we cannot in our lifetime stabilize Africa.

actually, we could, but our government would have to want to. up to this point, however, the government has been preventing stabilization

Without saying it properly, that's precisely what I meant. Hence the assertion of doom and gloom.

To clarify - didn't piss me off at HER, just wanted to squash HIM like a bug. As usual.

Thanks for you comment on Stephs string. I was hitting the exclamation point myself. Boring AND long-winded. What a hideous combination. I'd like, just once, to take him on - mano a mano. Or keyboard a keyboard. Maybe I could write a bait article, and everyone could just jump in there and vent and dispense with ALL their cares of the day!!!!

Airing weekly on PBS, the Emmy Award-winning series Independent Lens is like an independent film festival in your living room. Each episode introduces new documentaries and dramas made by independent thinkers: filmmakers who are taking creative risks, calling their own shots and finding untold stories in unexpected places.

Child armies? This isn't news, c'mon. Its just another day in the life, you know? That part of the world, and all.

Funny thing, that. Humanity having such differing value and definition, depending on where its found. As if a region's resources were somehow linked with a person at birth, something to be carried about with them throughout life as a measure of their inherent worth.

While I appreciate the empathy of the 4/25 "abductions" that took place, its really just something to make bleeding hearts feel good...like they've done something. Far better to invest that effort into creating a mobile strike force of a few motivated souls. Give them the support and logistics to go and kill the @!$%#ers at the root of the problem.

But maybe I'm just being too simplistic....feel free to complicate things to an acceptable level...

it would take more than a few. there are seven warlords practicing conscription on the continent of Africa today. it's also practiced in Asia and Central and South America. but then saying it's just part of the world makes you feel good

Sometimes the sarcasm doesn't arrive intact when a sentence translates from thought to written word. If you add a mental dash of it in the appropriate places, I think my comment will digest better. ☺
