    June 01, 2011Wed, 01 Jun 2011 04:00:00 GMT11:05 PM EST

The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale (first proposed in 1971 by Robert Simpson and Herbert Saffir) is a 1 to 5 categorization based on the hurricane's intensity at the indicated time. In general, damages rise by about a factor of four for every category increase.
