A hurricane prevented a major British-French sea battle along the Rhode Island coast. This hurricane caused extensive damage in southeastern New England.

A tornado ripped a path from White Plains, New York to Greenwich, Connecticut. A description of it read: "it looked black as smoke of a furnace, having a circular motion."

The temperature at Greenland Ranch in Death Valley, California soared to 127 degrees to establish a record for the U.S. for the month of August.

Texas reached its hottest temperature ever. Seymour, in the north central section of the state, hit 120 degrees.
