I don't have a problem playing older games in 4:3 either. A lot of the time, I'd rather not use the widescreen hacks and updates, because they mess up certain compositions or cause glitches. The Resident Evil remaster is especially bad. All the backgrounds are cropped. Fortunately, there's a 4:3 option. I don't know why anyone would play that game in 16:9.

4:3 content on a 21:9 monitor is a big problematic though. Case in point:

It's like looking at the content through a tube..

VR discussions on most gaming forums make me depressed.

Many Core Gamers seem to have the hardest time managing their notions of what a game is and ought to be and how VR affects that.

Something needs to click with people before they get why proper VR is easily worth $800.
They go from "I can't afford that, that's ridiculously expensive" to "No problem, I can save up for a few months" in the blink of an eye.

Some folks "get it" the moment they see the concept, other folks only get it when they put the thing on.

If you're not excited for VR, you're Probably not imagining the experience accurately. Because everyone that tries it gets excited for it.

People can't get past "It's a peripheral that you put on your head that enhances immersion".
Which is 100% not what VR is.

Playing on a 50 foot screen enhances immersion.
Playing with 3D glasses enhances immersion (Maybe).

With a proper VR experience, you're not playing anything. You're doing.

People have a hard time imagining how strapping two screens with lenses to your face gives you "1st Generation Matrix", and they associate the tedious, gimmicky bullshit you have in the Kinekt/WiiMote as representative of what VR interaction might look like.

0% indicative. And it's not a matter of "it's that but better". It's completely different.
Motion Controls have Very little impact if you see your arms on a screen.

They're not your arms. They don't matter. In VR they're your arms. This cannot be expressed strongly enough.

But there's really nothing I can say or show you that will generate that click, short of giving you a headset to try,and that's a bit disheartening for some reason.

Obviously, I'll try anyway.

Click or not, almost 1000 euros is a lot to spend on anything that isn't "important". I'm not speaking for other people here, just me. I can easily spend 1000+ euros on a PC, because having one is very important to me. I can even spend 1000 euros on a lens for my camera (and I have), because it's a fun investment that will last me a decade or even several decades.

But VR, while it may enhance some gaming experiences by several hundred percent, isn't a long term investment because it will be outdated in 2 years and is not urgent. Not being urgent meaning I can get it at a later date, when it's a better and more secure buy.

It's simply not reasonable to ask the average "gamer" to spend that much money on VR at this point in time. LinusTechTips did an online poll, asking their core audience if any of them had preordered Rift or Vive and like 95% said no. That doesn't mean that 95% of them "didn't quite get it". It's just a lot to ask at this point in time. When VR becomes an obvious "must have", then I'll pony up whatever the best VR cost, but it's simply too early to say that any VR is a "must have". It's not "mature" enough for that.

I'm sure the tech is worth the asking price, but at the birth of any new and successful technology, the first iterations are going to be short lived and replaced by better versions from the same company or from the competition in rapid succession. So buying VR right now is like paying a premium for the shortest living iterations. Only die hard, hard core fans will be part of that. And I thank them for it, because they are the ones paving the way for the rest of us to get on board later, when those companies sees the interest by the early adopters and then improves the product and lower the cost for mass adoption.

All hail the early adopters. I'm not one of them though. Not this time at least.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not shaming people for not flying into an $1000 investment head on.
For most people out there that's simply a financially irresponsible move.

What I'm saying is that most people, after trying it, say "I want this in my life".

Not sure about outdated in 2 years; I expect a degree of backward compatibility, at least on the Vive, because it has just about all the elements you need for the VR ecosystem in the near future.

Regardless, the swift writing-off of the technology is what I can't relate to, not the reluctance to drop a whole salary or two on it out of the gate.

Ye, VR is one of those things you shouldn't or can't dismiss until you've tried it.
Because it's the kind of experience that is impossible to explain or demonstrate indirectly.

I haven't tried VR glasses but I know everything that goes into it, so I can imagine. But my imagination may be underwhelming compared to the reality of VR or it may be a bit naive and overly optimistic. I need to try it to know how much money I would spend on it.

It's so irritating that there's no way to try it. I know no one that has devkits of Rift and no store in my tiny town will get some units for demonstration purposes. I bet it's like that for most people. So even trying VR is difficult for most people and so buying into VR relies a bit on faith and hope. Which is why people like me really need to wait for early adopters to say what they think and to see what the companies do in terms of supporting this first version long term and what software companies do with it in the first year or so. Because without that, VR is mostly faith and imagination.

Wtb VR demonstration booths in every little town in the world. :D

I don't really care about VR atm but I'm not pessimistic or hostile towards it. Once the technology improves and becomes more affordable I'll definitely look into it. But as of now, 21:9 gives me the most immersive (and affordable) gaming experience.

Speaking of VR, did anyone try the Gear VR using your phone?

It only works with Galaxy phones right? I only have OPO..

It only works with Galaxy S6-series and Note 5.

Looks fine to me. You're not even gonna see it as you're watching. It's black. At least they don't do this:

Fox did a marathon where they played all the older episodes of The Simpsons cropped. Ridiculous. People are so stupid.

My email provider has a very good news section for international news. All the most important and serious stuff happening is well covered there, complete with all news stories to related stuff that has happened before, so you always have the backstory to whatever is mentioned.

Today I saw 11 news stories, covering stuff from the US election campaign stuff, immigrant crisis, economy and stuff like that.

But..

Story number 5 was about something that happened in MY tiny town in Norway of 50.000 people. Let me quote you the entire story:

"Norwegian police trawl for goldfish owner

NTB (Norwegian news agency) says officers found the goldfish in a jam jar at the Nordlandshall indoor soccer stadium and decided to take it back to the police station because they couldn't find the owner. Ina Selfors, spokeswoman for the Nordland police district, told NTB that somebody likely had bought the goldfish and taken it to the stadium and forgot it there.

Selfors says she hopes the owner will contact them, adding that until then the fish "will stay in the jam jar and keep us company.""

AAAHAHAHAHA WTF!? How the hell did this story end up on this international news section? I've looked at this site every day for 15 years and they don't do "fluff stories" and they don't add in any regional stories either.

I'm so confused.
And amused.

EDIT:

LMAO!

Goldfish ownership is serious business bruh...

Sniper elite 4 coming out this year. i really enjoyed this series. good to see another one.

ChaosBahamut:
RIP Lionhead and (by extension) Fable Legends.

Hell yeah, SE2 was too linear, but 3 was awesome.

Not really all that surprising. I loved Fable TLC back in the day, but the sequels.. Right now you can't even get Fable 3. Only some used copies.

Okay I take back everything I said about VR. It's awesome.

they are making largest maps in sniper elite series.

What did you try?

Kina:
Okay I take back everything I said about VR. It's awesome.

I know the feel though. I didn't believe it would work AT ALL when my brother convinced me to pledging with him on the Kickstarter for Rift. But when I tried it myself... it really cannot be explained with words. Most people who haven't tried it think it's just like pressing a monitor close to your eyes, when in reality it is so much more. Your brain has never been tricked as hard as it gets with the Rift/Vive. You simply have to try it to understand.

Still not worth the asking price ?\_(ツ)_/?

Looking at negative feedbacks of alekhines gun i cant believe how they failed at it. because death to spies games were really good stealth games. even harder than thief.

Only because of your hyping. Developers could not handle the pressure of your expectations.

Can't say it looked very good to begin with. At all.

Oh my glob, there's a Bloodline Champions 2.0 coming out, and (no)Funcom is out.

I haven't been this hyped for a game in a long time.

Oh, that completely failed moba. Yep. Part two is coming out instead of fixing the first one. That's something to get hyped about all right.

Luny:
What did you try?

So basically Samsung had a promotion where if you pre-order the new S7/S7 Edge, you get the Samsung gear VR with it. Since I was already going for the S7 Edge, I figured why not. I got both yesterday and I went into it having really low expectations because first off, lolvr. Secondly, this is.. Samsung Gear VR. It'll be terrible for sure!

...

So I pop the thing in, get the Oculus store and everything, start going through apps, which videos are available etc etc, and it kind of went from: Oh yeah, this is a neat way to navigate through these things. Neat I can look all around. Neat, this looks way better than I expected. OH MY GOD I'M ACTUALLY SURFING.

It just immediately clicked and opened that door of possibility where you can see sooo many experiences working with this and being totally immersive (especially on a higher grade headset!) Then immediately passed it to my sister and my mom who were just as blown away.

MrJenssen:
You simply have to try it to understand.

That is 100% it. I was certainly blown away and it exceeded every expectation I could possibly have had regarding VR, the asking price is still a bit much as of right now I find. Sadly.

I got a warning for this on The Escapist. They said to not be rude to other users. I didn't think I was being rude at all. Just pointing out Black-Cell's BS. I almost never got warnings on Gametrailers, but on The Escapist I'm getting them pretty frequently. Two for low content replies and one for this.

Look, I've played Dark Souls, it's good but it's not that good. Jeez, the way people talk about the series reminds me of a cult sometimes. Kinda creepy.

I found dark souls incredibly overrated.

I don't suppose you can elaborate. Well, that would require you to actually understand the game and what the creators intended, and I know you like to shit on games you've barely given a chance.

You were condescending, but I don't see this as rude. Certainly not enough to warrant a warning, wtf...

Jesus christ, and you guys thought GT was bad? :3

I dont see that rude at all too. but i always bieng nice and friendly towards other users so i may not get any warning.

So who else is enjoying The Division at the moment?
I am absolutely loving it so far, MILES better than Destiny.

Will talk about the endgame when I get there :)

Gonna wait for reviews. Since ubi gave everyone codes at launch, I guess it will take a week for reviewers to grind trough it.

Loving it as well. Only level 8, so not far into it, but it's very fun. My only complaint so far is the matchmaker tends to put me in groups already in a mission, but won't me join them in progress.

Looks like No Man's Sky is shaping up pretty good based on what I see here:
