Don't Expect An Annual Installment of Battlefield

While the upcoming Battlefield 4 is easily one of the most highly-anticipated FPS titles in the industry, unlike it's largest competition, fans shouldn't expect to see an annual installment of the long-running franchise.

This according to DICE's Patrick Bach who told VideoGamer.com that annualizing the Battlefield franchise isn't really what the team has in mind either creatively or technically. "I think the core Battlefield idea that we're working on at DICE is… We can't build a game at DICE every year," said Bach.

Obviously, the Call of Duty franchise has seen an annual release for quite a while now as multiple studios crank out yearly offerings, but despite the fact that consumer demand indicates that fans "want Battlefield all year round", EA and DICE's approach might be evolving into more of a platform for digitally distributed content as opposed to full-on annual releases as made evident by offerings like Battlefield Premium.

"Maybe it's a really smart thing to do; maybe it's the completely wrong thing to do," Bach said. "We can see that some games are actually doing it already, like MMOs. You have some free-to-play games [that] continue on the same platform. So I think it's more about the audience and getting all the ducks in a row, so to speak."

So, what do you think about the way that EA and DICE are handling the Battlefield franchise? Would you welcome an annual installment or do you hope the series maintains some space in-between offerings in an effort to make each one truly better than the last?

Hit up the comments with your thoughts on the matter as we collectively await the October 29 release of Battlefield 4 on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC with next-gen versions of the game to follow.
