In the simplest terms, affiliate programs generally compensate visitors for helping to drive sales to a company's Web site.

Generally, an affiliate program is set up like this: A company encourages its customers to join their affiliate program. Once they do, that customer (now considered an affiliate) places a text link or graphical banner advertising the company on their personal Web site or blog. When people visit the affiliate's Web site, they may click on the link or banner and be taken to the company's site. The link or banner has a code tied to it that is unique to the affiliate; that way, the company is able to track the visitors that are coming from a specific affiliate's Web site. When someone makes a purchase on the company's Web site after arriving there through an affiliate's link or banner, the affiliate will be rewarded with a percentage of the sale, similar to how a clerk at a store is given a commission for making a sale.

The company made a sale, and possibly a new long-term customer, and the affiliate made some money for doing little more than placing a link or banner on their site.
