No Rain No Grain

Agriculture is the backbone of the Indian Economy.India is a huge exporter of various agricultural products such as rice, pulses, sugar, oil, etc. There are two main types of crops grown in India, the Kharif crop, is the autumn harvest (also known as the summer or monsoon crop as it’s usually sown with the beginning of south-west monsoon) and the Rabi crop is the spring harvest (also known as the “winter crop” hence sown during the months of November – December) About Jharkhand Agriculture Jharkhand, a predominantly tribal state in the Eastern India has rich deposit of minerals and a large number of active mines, generating millions as revenues. But the economy of this state is largely dependent on agriculture. In fact nearly 80% of the total population practices agriculture in Jharkhand. The state has a 2.57 hectares area of cultivable land which produces a total of 37.85 tons of food grains. Among the important crops that form an important part of agriculture of Jharkhand are, Paddy, Wheat , Pulses, Oilseeds, Maize, Sesame, Sugarcane, Bajra, etc. These crops largely support the socio-economic condition of the people of Jharkhand. However, despite this huge contribution towards the economy of the state, agriculture in Jharkhand is not as well developed as in the other states of India. This is because of the scarcity of water. Farmers in Jharkhand do not have proper irrigation facilities. So they have to be heavily dependent on monsoon. A delayed or erratic monsoon means reduction in their grain production and also limiting the cultivation to just one crop a year.
