There are various subspecies of Cutthroat Trout who's names indicate the region they are found. Cutthroat Trout are native to the American West. The fish is distributed on the coast from Prince William Sound, Alaska, to northern California and inland throughout the western U.S. and Canada.
The body of the Cutthroat Trout is usually five times as long as it is deep. The tail is slightly forked. All fins are rayed; the anal fin has 8-12 rays and there are 9-12 branchiostegals supporting the gill membranes.. The red markings which give the Cutthroat is's name are visible outside and below the lower jaw. Teeth are located at the base of the tongue.
Cutthroat Trout are found in rivers and lakes and the anadromous form enters saltwater. In most cases the Cutthroat does not compete well with other fish. This has resulted in the depletion of the species.
