Editing Average Prices

To display the Average Price, $ P&L, and % P&L amounts correctly in the Positions window, you need to have an accurate Average Price established for your security.

Edit Average Price

To edit your average price:

1. On the Positions toolbar, click Edit AvgPrices. View Graphic View Graphic

2. The Positions Editor displays. View Graphic View Graphic

3. Click the AvgPrice box for the symbol you want to change. View Graphic View Graphic

4. Type the average price of the stock.

5. Press Enter. The price changes in that symbol.

6. Click Save and Exit to apply the changes. The $ P&L and % P&L will continue to track from that point forward.

Calculating the Average Price

Cash/Margin Trades - (Purchase Quantity / Total Purchase Quantity * Purchase Price) + Total Average Price

Short Trades - (Short Sell Quantity / Total Short Sell Quantity * Short Sell Price) + Total Average Price

Note: Intraday executions are calculated first.

If there is a previous position with an average price, the same method is applied. For example:

  • Previous position: MSFT, Quantity = 100, Price = 20
  • Today's execution: MSFT, Bought 100, Price = 30
  • Today's execution: MSFT, Bought 200, Price = 40
  • Today's execution: MSFT, Sold 100, Price = 40

Calculation

Total Purchase Quantity for Today's Executions is: 100 + 200 = 300

Total Purchase Quantity for today's execution plus the previous position is: 300 + 100 = 400

[(100/300) x 30] + [(200/300) x 40] = 36.67 intraday average price

[(100/400) x 20] + [(300/400) x 36.67] = 32.5025 intraday plus previous average price

Note: If the symbol is displaying with a *R after the symbol, you will not be able to change the Average Price. *R is a Uniform Practice Code 11830 restricted security. Securities subject to the close-out requirement are those with an aggregate "clearing" short position of 10,000 shares or more that equals or exceeds one half of one percent of the total shares outstanding.
