Disconnecting the head from the body, being able to look around, is an amazing feature for any first person game. Then they can go the extra mile and build in something like this, with the motion controls. Also, the Kinect failed because they made bad products for it, period. EDIT; We can't expect VR to grow (as much as a lot of people would like) unless they establish themselves in the mainstream.
I don't know if its allowed here, but Dolphin Emu hits version number 5.0 soon and a D12X Backend is also available.
Even just using the first Rift with Half-Life 2, without any motion controls or sensors on the Rift goggles, I had one of the best gaming experiences in my life. When I ran from those Combine troops in the beginning, I RAN for my life. And once I got a pistol and an SMG and started fighting back the Combine down in those sewer canals, I felt like one of the most bad ass action heroes of all time. The experience really cannot be described, you have NO clue how immersive it is unless you try it for yourself. And I only speak for my experience with my own Rift set - which was the very first, 720p set with (barely noticable) latency issues and so on. I can only imagine how amazing the final product will be. Watch this guy:
Reloading the magnum pistol by tilting it to the side to get the drum out, then backwards to make the bullets fall out, and then put in the next speed loader. How awesome is that?! That's the thing that will ensure that the RIft never becomes the Kinect. Because no matter how obsucre it might become, it will never just fade away and stop getting any sort of games or software. Indie devs, modders and the likes will always make something for it. The Xbox's Kinect never had that luxury, as it was bound to the console and Microsoft. Modders were never allowed to do anything with it (on Xbox). And like you said, the Kinect really wasn't all that great anyway. It worked for some but not for others.
I would like to try it out, but I am not sure about wearing a gigantic glasses with no awareness of your real surroundings. I guess its fine for short sessions.
Fixed the video. | |
Why care about your real surroundings when you're playing?
Welp, /r/Oculus has officially gone to shit. It started out as a central hub for all things VR, but as the release gets closer, the landscape is more and more dominated by brand-fanboyism. Which is very sad. Vive news gets buried, Oculus get touted as winners. It's the console wars allover again. (Which, ultimately, was to be expected). Because the Oculus exceeded estimations and went from ~400 to 600, there's a disturbing number of people yelling that the Vive will surely be over 1000. While it would make sense for the Valve to be higher priced than the Rift, there's little to back up an estimation that high. Valve covered the Vive's R&D; Costs entirely, and are still doing so. Here's hoping these senseless predictions don't turn out surprisingly correct. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Also. The "breakthrough" that delayed the Vive is indeed confirmed to be the camera in the middle of the Vive headset. The camera films what's in front of it, and is integrated with the Lighthouse system. Processing is applied afterwards. What you get in the end is a 3D!(this is big) wireframe/edge view of what's in front of you. You don't see a 2D Projection of your room. The Camera + Lighthouse output your surroundings in the form of virtual objects, that appear in the VR world as if they were part of it. Here's a video of it in action: It doesn't look like much, because they're simply asking the users to get closer to a wall, but it has a huge potential for mixed reality applications. Chet confirms this here Imagine: - You put the headset on. The Chaperone system was originally meant to warn you of reaching the boundaries of your play-space. Additionally, another cool thing they've come up with is Mura Correction. It's not immersion-breaking, but it makes for an artificial aesthetic. ------------------------------------------------------
Thoroughly recommend watching AGDQ right now for Stepmania... http://www.twitch.tv/gamesdonequick It is unbelievable.
I think I tuned into what was objectively the most beautiful moment the internet has ever had.
That's definitely me, nowhere near you.
Watching now, I always love these.
Hnnngggg, Samsung's concept modular/transforming TV's at CES are really sick. Silly, but still sick.

Looks like the Nine Inch Nails concert I went to. They was using tech like this.

that face... LMAO | |
I'm sure HL3 is already being worked on. People, myself included, said The Last Guardian would never come out and look what happened to that. It was re-announced and is launching this year. Valve's last big game (Portal 2) wasn't even that long ago (2011). I mean, Avatar took 15 years from James Cameron's inception to its release. People should stop moaning about the game. Valve should reveal it when they're ready. Not years in advance, making everyone lose interest as they continually tease new footage. I don't get why so many publishers do this. By the time MGS4 came out, I hardly cared anymore. I don't have overblown expectations, like a lot of these fools. I just want a good game. A game with identity.
Hell, they began working on it before Episode 2 was out. But I agree. I think Fallout 4 had some of the best marketing I've seen in a long time.
So in an effort to learn how to work with OSX, I picked up a Macbook pro today. D: Hopefully this is worth it!
I'm so goddamn stoked for Firewatch. Comes out in a month.
Firefall is already out, and it's good. You should play it.
I can never tell when you're joking, Zorlac. EDIT;
Yea. What the fuck? | |
I mean, there are a lot of people saying they'll buy an Oculus instead because they don't have the room for a Vive. Unrelated: Pretty sweet edit of a Ben Kenobi scene.

200kg/440lbs deadlift today. Woop!
Valve has made tons of money through steam. they dont need Half life to make them more money.
Except it was only 3 years ago since their last game. I know you don't think it's a "real" game, but you're wrong.
its been 12 year since thier proper game except portal 2 which was also 6 year old game which they dont really want to make.. HL3 is not coming unless valve handle franchise to newly developer studio and become a publisher. Valve already said many times that they are only interested in steam and F2P and dota 2. its not coming out anytime soon. get over it.
Three years, no six. "Valve already said many times that they are only interested in steam and F2P and dota 2" Source, plz.
so what game they released 3 years ago?
DOTA 2 and CSGO was released 2012.
He doesn't consider those "proper" games.
CSGO was remake and CS was originally a MOD of Half life. where is a real proper SP valve game??
So you acknowledge they still make games, but that they haven't made one to your taste in a while.
