The last night of 2008 offered an interesting alignment of the Moon and planets. In the southwest sky at sunset we were able to observe Mercury & Jupiter in very close proximity just above the horizon .

Tonight's Evening Sky Surprise

Tonight the evening sky gives us another nice view. The slender crescent Moon is approaching a conjunction with Venus. Then the next two nights it will move closer to Venus and at the same time Mercury and Jupiter are converging for their own Dec. 31st conjunction.

It was a typical Georgia winter day. We had rain, snow flurries and then clear skies throughout the day. I had prepared my equipment the night before but was doubtful that the opportunity to photograph the heavens was going to present itself.
